BCAM All-Star Game

The Huron League was well represented at the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan All-Star game. Flat Rock's Andrew Scarton and Huron's Zac Richardson played for the White Team which won the game A/B game over the Black Team 101-98. Scarton scored 5 points while swiping 3 steals and Richardson dropped in 7 points to go with 5 rebounds.

The win over the Black Team was impressive because Mr Basketball and Michigan State bound Keith Appling of Detroit Pershing poured in 41 points. Michigan State bound Alex Gauna from Eaton Rapids chipped in 11 points and 6 rebounds.

The White squad was led by Kalamazoo Central and Dayton bound Devin Oliver with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Flint Powers graduate Demarcos Sanders who is headed to Ferris State scored 27 points.

Both Scarton and Richardson are going onto play college ball. Scarton will go the JUCO route and play at Owens Community College in Toledo while Richardson will head to Ann Arbor to play for Concordia University.

Memories

Over the years I have had the opportunity to coach many talented kids. Whether it is was basketball or track & field there are certain kids who stand out athletically more than others.

I was fortunate enough early in my career to coach a young man named Trent McNeely who would go onto to be an all-state basketball player at Ann Arbor Greenhills, Jesse Davis who went on to be an all-stater in basketball at Willow Run. Any coach could tell that those young kids were going to be great players.

Mutli-sport athletes like Flat Rock's Tom Oestrike were always great to be around. Oestrike was an excellent quarterback, all-state pitcher and one of the best all round basketball players I have ever coached. His 6'5" size with long range shooting ability made him a tough match-up for teams.

As the varsity basketball coach at Dearborn Advanced Technology Academy afforded me the opportunity to coach a 6'7" player named Jeremy Beasley who would go onto to play hoop at Lake Superior State.

Throw in athletes like Devan Crain who was an all state basketball player and an all-state hurdler at Flat Rock along with Joe Conner who excelled in football, basketball and most certainly track and I'll say I have it pretty good over the years.

With all these great athletes that I have had the opportunity to coach, one kid really stands out. Many around the Huron League probably don't recognize this name or remember him but his name is Marcos Williams.

I met Marcos while coaching JV basketball at Huron in the mid-90's. Marcos was a skinny 6'1" guard type who had a silky smooth jump shot and a never ending vertical jump. I had Marcos on my JV squad for exactly 3 games that season. He was swiftly taken up to the varsity team after averaging 31 points in those first 3 games. Marcos came off the bench his first varsity game but started every game the rest of the season. He averaged a cool 12 points and 6 rebounds while taking a backseat to the seniors on the Chief squad.

Marcos's junior year was a special one. He was named first team All-Huron League, All Region for Monroe County and made the News Herald All-Downriver team while averaging just over 20 points and 10 rebounds a game. Marcos was forced to play inside because of the talent level of the team but managed to knock down a ton of three-pointers that season. Marcos was a fun kid to be around, he was always pleasant and just wanted to play hoop.

In the Spring of Marcos junior year I ran into him in New Boston as I was about to get breakfast. He sat down with me and we spent an hour together. I asked Marcos why he wasn't in school and he told me he had been kicked out for excessive absences. I calmly asked him why he had been missing school and he said he hadn't missed a day all semester. He went on to explain to me that he had been tardy over 30 times that semester and 3 tardies equaled one absence, eleven absences meant expulsion.

As I questioned Marcos why he was tardy that many times he told me he would arrive to school 10 minutes late most mornings because he was responsible for getting his younger brother on the school bus. Both his parents worked early and if he didn't get his sibling on the bus to elementary school he wouldn't get on by himself. Now I'm not naive enough to believe that was the whole story, but when I questioned the Vice-Principal at Huron he confirmed that it was the tardies that led to his expulsion

Because of his expulsion that year Marcos ended up inelgible for the first semester of his senior year, without basketball his grades faltered and he missed the entire year. One of the best players that Huron had ever had was done with his career.

I only saw Marcos a handful of times after his high school days. He was the same kid, always happy and always friendly to me and wanting to talk.

I hadn't thought about Marcos for some time until my father stopped by the house about a week or so ago. He had an obituary in his hand. Marcos had passed away at the young age of 33 years. Marcos stilled lived in New Boston and was the father of three children.

If I was a betting man, I'm sure Marcos could still play at the age of 33. He was unlike any player to ever wear the red and white of a Huron Chief. He could stroke it from 25 feet, attack the basket, hit a pull up "J", or dunk right over you. He was also a fierce rebounder and an excellent defender. Although I hadn't seen him in over 10 years, I'll miss Marcos, but at least I have the memories.

Open Gym

If your looking for an opportunity to play basketball on the weekends Lutheran South on Telegraph Rd. in Newport host an open gym every Sunday from 4 pm to 6 pm. There is a donation of $2 required at the door. Also part of the requirement is to leave your trash talking at home. No foul language is tolerated. The recommendation is to bring both a light and dark colored shirt.

Participation is lighter in the summer but it is a great place to play a laid back yet competitive few hours of hoops. You will find some solid players there on a regular basis including former All-Region players and up and coming youngsters. You may even find your's truly fatten' around the court a bit.

Some people don't like playing in the hot weather but the Lutheran South gym is air conditioned so some of us old guys don't pass out from exhaustion. Hope to see you there.

June Basketball Predictions

Well it is the end of June and I thought I would throw out my order of finish based on what I have seen in summer ball thus far. It looks as if most of the teams are done for the summer. I do believe that Milan and Riverview are still competing over at the Romulus Summer League.

1)Riverview
2)Milan
3)Huron
4)SMCC
5)Grosse Ile
6)Flat Rock
7)Jefferson
8)Airport

This should give us a little something to chew on.

Woodhaven Summer League

I had a chance today to get out and see Flat Rock, Jefferson and Huron today at the Woodhaven Summer League.

Jefferson seemed to be getting comfortable with 2nd year head coach Jon Scharf. The Bears looked like they were missing a few bodies but were led by the athletic Jacob Sterling. Sterling knocked down a handful of shots while running the offense for Jefferson.

Flat Rock was led by senior Tim Cottongim. He seeemed to get open looks and get to the basket numerous times. Senior Rashard Wade looked solid at times especially when attacking the basket.

Huron looks as if they will be a solid team again this season. The Chiefs handled Woodhaven with ease and slipped by a big physical Annapolis squad by one. Huron was led by guards Jesse Wint and Nick Corbiel.

Woodhaven Summer Ball

I stopped by the Woodhaven summer league today and was able to catch some of the Flat Rock/Riverview match up.

The Rams appear to be young and undersized but look like they have some quickness and athleticism. The Bucs looked pretty solid behind the play of Brad Stewart and Mike Kowalski. They have plenty of size and athleticism and will be you typical Riverview team this year. They hammered the boards and really look to play the passing lanes.

I'm not sure what the final score ended up. Flat Rock led at halftime but Riverview pulled away and seemingly won by double digits.

On another note, the game was officiated by former Airport coaches Ernie Sellers and Spencer Roecker. The two looked in mid-season form and appear the have the makings of a good solid officiating unit.

Summer Ball Up and Running.

This weekend kicked off the summer high school basketball season. Two of the league favorites for next season, Riverview and Milan were at Westland John Glenn to play in one of the better area summer league/tournaments.

Both teams fared pretty well over the weekend. The Big Reds went 3-1 during the weekend against some solid competition and were playing without some of their better players.

Riverview also went 3-1 against Class A competition and were led by their returning 1st team all-leaguer Brad Stewart.

Milan and Riverview will both be part of the upcoming Woodhaven League and then will move onto the ultra competitive Romulus Summer League where some of the best teams in the state will be playing.
Defending Class B champs Detroit Country Day and Class C champs Melvindale ABT are excpected to return to the Romulus League again this year.

Flat Rock's Devan Crain Signs with Goshen College

I spoke to former Flat Rock All Stater Devan Crain today and he told me he had signed with Goshen College in Indiana. From what I saw this winter in JUCO ball, this is a steal for the NAIA school.

http://goleafs.net/mens-basketball/2010/two-way-threat-devan-crain-signs-with-maple-leaf-basketball/

As you can see in the article Devan's work ethic and personality really sets him apart. These are the same qualities that Devan displayed for me while running track at Flat Rock. The first year senior was able to finish 3rd in the Division 3 State Meet in the High Hurdles.

Congrats to Devan!

Richardson Commits to Concordia

Huron's Zac Richardson committed to playing basketball and soccer at Concordia University in Ann Arbor today.

The 6'3" swing man in basketball will be taking his scoring touch to the hardwood while bringing his athleticism to the soccer field as a goalie.

Richardson was the Monroe County Region Player of the Year in soccer while leading the Chiefs to Huron League titles in both sports.

On a personal note, it was nice to see a student athlete from my Alma Mater St. John's Lutheran in Waltz head on to get a college education at a quality Lutheran University.

2009-10 Final Thoughts

I thought the league was very athletic this year.

While the debate rages on, the Huron league was no better or no worse than the recent past.

Three district championships for the league isn't bad.

It doesn't look like there will be any coaching changes prior to next year.

The stars of the Huron League this year look like they will be headed to Division III or NAIA schools next year.

No matter how you slice it you win championships with seniors and defense.

When you win, its talent. When you lose, its coaching.

Falcons Bow Out in Regional Final

SMCC missed a golden opportunity to advance into the state quarterfinals on Wednesday night as they lost to the 23-2 Pirates of Napoleon 45-43. Jon Pederson's three-point attempt at the buzzer fell short and brought the Falcon's season to an end.

Napoleon opened the game by nailing a trio of three-pointers and led after one quarter 13-8. The Falcons struggled from the line early on by missing five freethrows in the period.

The game continued at a slow pace in the second quarter as the teams struggled to score. The Pirates led 18-14 at the half.

In the third quarter the pace of the game picked up immensely with both teams scoring regularly and Napoleon leading 31-29.

Entering the fourth quarter SMCC seemed to have the momentum when they tied the game at 31-31. The Pirates went on to score the next seven points to take a 38-31 lead with 3:11 to play. The Falcons frantically picked up the defense led by the senior Pederson to get back into the game.

The Falcons were able to close the gap late by hitting some timely shots and Napoleon struggling at the charity stripe (11-21).

The Falcons were led by Edmond Shinavarre's 13 points and Keenan Wetzel's 11. Pederson led the defense with several steals and pass deflections while chipping in 7 points. The Falcon's finished the season at 13-11.

Napoleon had a balanced scoring attack that featured six three-pointers by four different players. Senior guard C.J. Adams led the Pirates with 13 points.

Napoleon advances to the quarterfinals at Richland Gull Lake and will play Bridgeman which defeated Fennsville this evening 45-44.

Wednesday Regional Final Game

Class C @ Adrian Madison

SMCC (13-10)/ Napoleon (22-2) 7 pm The Pirates of Napoleon are 22-2 and are led in scoring by C.J. Adams and Heath Sullivan. Napoleon also has two others capable of scoring in Tyler Piotrowski and Keith Wood. The Pirates only losses were to Cascade League rival Hanover-Horton, who is still alive in Class C. SMCC will once again be led by Keenan Wetzel and Edmond Shinavarre. The Falcons have also relied heavily on their role players this season and most recently during their nice five game winning streak. Coach Randy Windham has settled in nicely into the unenviable position of following a basketball legend in Ray Lauwers. Windham will go for a Regional Championship in his first season at the helm and will look to join SMCC's girls coach Rick Niemi in the quarter-finals. Pick: Falcons by 1 OT

Huron's Dream Season Ends

Huron fell tonight 41-36 to Detroit Douglas in the semi-final game hosted by Riverview. The PSL Southwest Division champs used their quickness, size and an effective matchup zone to neutralize the Chief's leading scorer Zac Richardson.

Huron trailed 13 -12 at the end of the first quarter and the game was tied 21-21 at the half. Douglas pressed most of the first half but were unable to gain an advantage.

In a surprising move Hurricane coach Nkwane Young switched to a matchup zone in the 2nd half. Huron was held to only 1 point in the 3rd quarter but Douglas was only able to build a 3 point lead at the end of three quarters.

Douglas controlled most of the 4th quarter but were never able to build a lead larger than six points. Huron used some opportunistic plays and timely freethrow shooting to get themselves back to within three points with 8 seconds to play and the ball in their posession. Jim Kalbfleisch ran a nice play for Richardson in an attempt to tie the game on a three point attempt but his shot fell short.

Dave Stockert led the Chiefs with 15 points as the Chiefs finished with the best record in school history at 23-1. Detroit Douglas moves to the Regional Final on Wednesday and improves to 18-5 on the season.

Monday Night Regional Games

Class B Regional @ Columbia Central

Milan/Lansing Sexton 7:30 PM. Lansing Sexton is 18-5 and coached by former MSU Spartan Carlton Valentine. They are led by Tyrin Wade, Denzel Valentine and Anthony Clemens. Sexton won they Capital Area Conference's Red Division. Milan enters this game with nothing to lose and everything to gain. Most everyone locally believes that Milan is probably a year away. Look for them to be relaxed and confident on Monday night. Milan should be able to match Sexton's athleticism. Pick: Big Reds by 5. The Big Reds of Lansing Sexton

Class B Regional @ Riverview

Huron/Detroit Douglas 5:30 PM The Hurricanes enter Mondays regional as champions of the Detroit PSL Southwest Division. Douglas is coached by Nkwane Young and is led on the floor by a pair of 6'4" players in Timothy Bates and Dennis Hogan. The Hurricanes love to press and play uptempo basketball. Huron has a tendency to play to the level of their competition. Look for the Chiefs to just play their game by taking care of the ball and playing solid defense. Huron will need their stars to step up along with their key players off of the bench. Pick: Chiefs by 1 OT

Class C Regional @ Adrian Madison

SMCC/Bronson 6:00 PM The Vikings of Bronson bring in a 10-12 record to the Regional at Madison. Bronson plays in the St. Joseph Valley League and finished 3rd in the four team league. The Vikings have a balanced offensive attack and are led by Matt Miller and 3-point shooter Dalton Kane. SMCC is playing like the team that many envisioned when they were picked by the Blog pollsters as the team to beat in the Huron League. The Falcons will need solid games from their offensive leaders and will need to control the boards if they expect to advance to Wednesdays Regional Final. Pick: Falcons by 4

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Congratulations to Randy Windham and Josh Tropea on winning district championships in their first seasons at SMCC and Milan.

Milan Sophomore Andre Duffin is the real deal.

Huron's Zac Richardson was out of his mind last night against Jefferson.

Edmond Shinavarre and Keenan Wetzel of SMCC are playing like stars.

Milan's C.J Luvene took over in the 4th quarter against Chelsea.

Huron is 26-0 at home over the last two seasons.

SMCC and Huron have winnable Regionals.

Milan has a tall task in their Regional at Columbia Central.

Can the Huron League win its first regional in 15 years?

Huron League Boasts Three Champions!

After the first week of tournament play the Huron League crowned three champions in District play.

Huron was able to win the district it hosted as expected by knocking off an upstart Jefferson squad. Zac Richardson scored 28 for the victors who held off an inspired Bear team bent on pulling off the upset. The Chiefs will play Monday in Riverview at 5:30 pm against Detroit Fredrick Douglas who defeated Detroit Southwestern.

SMCC entered the district at Blissfield as an underdog to Dundee and Whiteford but showed that the Falcons have plenty of talent and play better competition during the course of the season. Edmond Shinavarre's 3-pointer with 2 seconds left sealed the victory. SMCC will play in the Regional at Adrian Madison on Monday at 6 pm against 10-12 Bronson in what appears to be a winnable game.

Milan entered the Class B district at Chelsea as a longshot to win the title. The Big Reds were most likely to fall to a trio of teams that included the hosts along with Willow Run and Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard. The youngsters from Milan led by sophomore sensation Andre Duffin will play in the Regional hosted by Brooklyn Columbia Central on Monday at 7:30 PM against 18-4 Lansing Sexton.

Friday Night District Games

Class B at Chelsea

Milan/Chelsea 7 pm This should be an interesting matchup between these two teams. Chelsea has played well at times while stuggling at times as well. The Bulldogs have a quality coach and a nice tradition. Milan has been up and down this season but are a tough team to beat when the 3 ball is falling. This would be a great win for the league but playing a Chelsea will be tough. Pick: Bulldogs by 3

Class B at New Boston Huron

Jefferson/Huron 7 pm These teams have played twice this year with the Chiefs winning both games. On paper this looks like a blowout but Jefferson has a nice three game win streak going. The physical Bears would like nothing more than to pull off the biggest win in school history. The Chiefs need to remain focused for four quarters. They can't keep turning things on in the 4th quarter and expect to win. Pick: Chiefs by 7

Class C at Blissfield

SMCC/Dundee 7 pm These teams met early in the season with Dundee winning by 3 in Monroe. The Vikings have a solid starting five and two star players. The Falcons have found their identity and could salvage an average season by winning the district. Both teams have quality coaches who will put their teams in a position to win. This is a game I might go down and see because it should be a barn-burner. Pick: Falcons by 1 2OT

Wednesday Night District Games

Class A at Saline

Airport/Adrian 8 pm The Jets continue to play well and will face their second straight SEC foe. Adrian has hovered around the .500 mark all season and the Jets have a farely favorable matchup in this game. Look for Baseball season to be put on hold a little longer in Carleton. Pick: Jets by 2

Class B at Huron

Jefferson/Erie Mason 5:30 pm This will be the third time these two teams have met with the Eagles winning the early season matchup and the Bears winning just last week. Coach Scharf has the Bears contiually playing hard and they are starting to believe in themselves. Look for Jefferson to stick around for another game. Pick: Bears by 3

Trenton/Huron 7:00 pm These two teams met in January and the Chiefs won big. With Huron's rival out of the way the Chiefs can put away the emotion and let hard work and talent win this game. Look for Huron to avoid a let down and be in the district final on Friday. Pick: Chiefs by 9

Class B at Chelsea

Ann Arbor Skyline/Milan 5:30 pm For the first time this season the Big Reds will play a team that has more youth than themselves. The Eagles are a 2nd year school with only freshmen and sophomores on the roster. They have played mostly a JV schedule but ride a 5 game winning streak against varsity opponents. Milan will not take the Eagles lightly in the semi-final in hopes of building momentum for next season. Pick: Big Reds by 5

Class B at Dearborn Heights Robichaud

Riverview/Robichaud 6 pm Riverview will take on the host who won the first season of the Western Wayne Athletic League's Red Division. This isn't your typical Bulldog team and the Bucs should find themselves with an opportunity to reach the district final. Much will depend on Riverview's ability to get to the freethrow line. This is a tough one to pick but I will give the nod to the home team. Pick: Bulldogs by 1 OT

Class C at Blissfield

Whiteford/SMCC 5:30 pm This will be a matchup of two different styles. Whiteford will look to get up and down the floor while the Falcons will look to use their size and shooting to their advantage. These two teams don't play very often and it should be an interesting matchup. Look for Randy Windham to get his first tournament victory. Pick: Falcon by 3

The Rams led midway through the 3rd quarter 24-19 when Huron went on a 27-9 run to close out the game.

Kill or Keep the Blog?

Just thought I would throw out a little poll to determine if this silly little blog was a good idea or not.

I'm not big into controversy and I could really care less if the blog continues after the season ends so help me decide.

The crying on here has been a bit much and you only get to see about half of it.

I like to think the player bashing has been kept off for the most part. I also like to think I have help create a little more interest in basketball around the Huron League.

The football blog will continue next season and I have to say I enjoyed doing it much more than the basketball blog.

So please let me know your vote and post a comment if you like.

Monday Night District Games

Jefferson/Grosse Ile @ Huron 5:30 pm. This game is a chance for both teams to use as a momentum booster for next season. The Islanders have already beaten the Bears twice but this is a Jefferson team that has been playing better lately. Jeffeson will need to get some balanced scoring out of it's lineup and rebound the ball effectively if they are to win. Grosse Ile needs to use their speed and shooting ability if they plan on getting their 3rd victory over the Bears this season. Pick: Bears by 2.

Flat Rock/Huron @ Huron 7:00 pm. This is the third installment of what has been a great series this season and last. Huron has manged to win the first two games but the Rams are eyeing an opportunity to ruin their rivals finest season in school history. This is a matchup between two very good players but look for another player to decide the outcome. If you want to see two teams that don't particularly care for each other and have already played two barn burners this year then come out for the game. This is a tough one to pick but I have to say it is tough to beat a team three times in one season. Pick: Rams by 1 OT

Airport/Saline @ Saline 8 pm. Saline has struggled this season but they play in a competitive league which should prepare them for the Jets. Airport has been playing some fine basketball as of late but their size may hurt them on Monday Night. The Jets will need to have a solid shooting night if they are to win this game. The Hornets will have an advantage by having the homecourt advantage but look for Airport to win a close game on the road. Pick: Jets by 1

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Has anyone seen the Andrew Scarton dunk videos on youtube? It's pretty entertaining.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMxOMBY1Btg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fdtq1GW7m_g&NR=1

It was nice to see Jefferson get a win after what seemed like an endless losing streak. (I know how that feels)

When was the last time a Huron League team went 20-0? I know the answer:)

Solid win for Milan over Dundee, with or without Wolfenberger.

I'm sorry I missed the Airport/Huron game. Sometimes there are more important things than sports.

Look for SMCC to have a big season next year.

Defense and rebounding still win games.

How many district champs will the league have?

Look for detailed district preview games and predictions sometime early Sunday morning.

All Huron League Blog

Well the season is officially over and it is time to unveil my All Huron League picks.

Player of the Year Zac Richardson Huron, Quite simply put, the best player on what was easily the best team in the league for a second straight year. Richardson averaged 21 points, 3.3 steals, 3 assist and 3 rebounds for the undefeated 14-0 Chiefs. Richardson shot 39% from 3 point land and 46% overall. He was also an 81% shooter from the freethrow line. The Chiefs completed a perfect 20-0 season in 2010 a feat which has only been done a handful of times in the Huron League.

Andrew Scarton Flat Rock, The slick PG from Flat Rock dazzled everybody in the league this year with his Hot Sauce handles, mad hops and unlimited shooting range. Scarton was easily the funnest player to watch in the Huron League the last two seasons.

Brad Stewart Riverview, The junior PG from Riverview has an uncanny knack to get to the freethrow line. Stewart's Bucs finished 11-3 in the Huron League and should be the team to beat next year in the league.

David Stockert Huron, perhaps the most improved player in the league. Stockert was a force on the boards and was an intimidating shot blocker on defense. The senior center averaged 13 ppg and shot 65% from the field.

Tyler Baker Airport, undoubtedly the leader of the Jets senior laden line up. Baker continued the solid tradition of Bakers at Airport by leading the Jets in virtually every statistical category except scoring.

Keenan Wetzel SMCC, Wetzel is probably the best pure shooter in the league. He led the Falcons in scoring and it 3 point field goals made despite being the focus of every defense in the league

Coach of the Year Jim Kalbfleisch Huron, Kalbfleisch led the Chiefs to their first undefeated season in school history and back to back Huron League Championships. The savvy veteran won't dazzle you with a likeable personality but his players are ferociously loyal and he does nothing but win every close game.

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Tuesday's match up between Airport and Huron should be interesting.

Flat Rock's guards versus Dundee's big men this week.

Milan looks like they could be very good next year.

Jefferson is winless in the Huron League but they play hard.

SMCC looks as if they are turning things around a bit.

Looks like the bullseye will be on Riverview next season.

I wonder how Airport will fare in a Class A District.

I guess the only award that really matters is the League Championship.

Richardson and Scarton took over when necessary and it was fun to watch those two battle. Flat Rock held a 41-32 advantage late in the 3rd. Huron eventually tied it at 42 and it was a barn burner the rest of the way. I look forward to their rematch in districts. Huron clinched their 2nd straight outright Huron League title with the come from behind win.

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Congrats to Huron for winning their 2nd straight Huron League Championship.

I look forward to seeing Airport and Huron play now that the Jets are back at full strength and firing on all cylinders.

I remember not to long ago when state ranked Flat Rock and state ranked SMCC would play games in the 40's against each other.

Andrew Scarton's 91% free throw percentage is amazing.

As is Brad Stewart's 141 attempts from the free throw line through 15 games.

It's nice to see one of my preseason all league picks Edmond Shinevarre playing well right now.

Is Milan starting to come back to earth or are other teams playing that well right now?

It's hard to argue that a player averaging 21 ppg on the league's only undefeated team isn't the Player of the Year in the league.

When will Grosse Ile be a league contender again?

This may sound crazy but after looking at the Regional pairings Huron has a chance to win the schools first regional in Boy's Basketball.

Airport Hammers Flat Rock

Airport scored 24 points in the opening quarter in rout to a 16 point lead and cruised to a 69-49 win over defenseless Flat Rock.

Daniel Jones scored 16 points including 4 three pointers while Jimmie Fiddler scored 14. The Jets led 41-17 at half time and stretched the lead to 57-29 at the end of three.

Andrew Scarton tossed in 18 for Flat Rock, half of which came in the 4th quarter while the Airport starters were taking the rest of the evening off. Scarton did have a nice two foot left handed dunk in the 4th.

The win improves Airport to 5-5 in the league and 8-7 overall. Flat Rock falls to 5-5 in the league and 6-9 overall.

The highlite of the night for me was the Airport pep bands rendition of Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville during the halftime festivities.

On another note it was nice to see fellow St. John's Waltz member Jeremy Pidgeon score 9 points in the game on three long range bombs.

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Barring a major collapse Huron should win their 2nd straight league title.

Riverview looks like they should be a solid league contender next season.

Milan's youth is starting to show.

Brad Stewart sure gets to the line a lot.

SMCC seems to be finding their comfort zone with the new coach.

Where was Dex Teen Friday?

Flat Rock is playing like the team many thought they would be this year.

Airport has a lot of offensive weapons in the line up now.

Will Huron lose a game in the league or will they run the table?

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Who is the best player in the league?

Will any of these guys play college ball?

GI over SMCC by 7, Airport by 36 over GI, Huron over SMCC by 3.

Does that make any sense?

Coaches coach, players play and referees ref. I think that says enough.

Is the Huron League any good?

Kalbfleisch won another close one.

Is shooting a lost art?

Andre Duffin was unbelieveable last night.

Riverview keeps winning.

Jefferson seems to be getting better.

Airport seems to like having Jeremy Pidgeon back.

Flat Rock Surprises Milan

With the "Coming Home" festivities happening in Flat Rock tonight I thought I would go check out my alma mater against Milan.

The Rams didn't disappoint the big crowd as they basically led wire to wire. Flat Rock scored the first basket of the night and led the whole way until C.J Luvene tied the game at 52 on a freethrow with 17.1 seconds to go in the game.

The Rams won the game on a layup at the buzzer by Andrew Scarton. The ball rolled around the rim and fell in to give the Rams their biggest win of the year by a score of 54-52.

Flat Rock led the Big Reds 23-20 at the half and quickly built a 13 point lead on a series of layups and solid defense. The game hovered around the 10 point mark until about 5 minutes to go in the 4th quarter.

Milan Sophomore Andre Duffin decided to take over and scored 17 of his game high 31 points in the 4th. The sweet shooting youngster hit five three's in the game and had two dunks while leading the Big Reds.

Duffin basically did everything for Milan and it is rumored that he even helped the Ram Boosters sell popcorn at halftime.

Scarton led the victors with 16 points while Tim Cottingim added 14. Flat Rock improves to 4-4 in the Huron League while Milan drops to 6-2.

Huron Nips Milan 55-52

Milan put a scare into Huron this evening but the Chiefs did what they had to do down the stretch in defeating an upstart Big Red squad 55-52 in New Boston.

The Chiefs were led by Zac Richardson who scored 18 points but was forced by a stingy Milan defense to earn everything he got. Dave Stockert dodged foul trouble enough to drop in 11 while Caleb Tavtigian scored 9 including 2 freethrows late in the game to help seal the win.

The youthful Big Reds were led in scoring by C.J. Luvene with 17 and Andre Duffin who scored 15. Milan's coach Josh Tropea was a joy to watch as he coached as hard as anyone I have seen in quite some time.

Huron improves to 13-0 with the win and 7-0 in the Huron League. Milan falls to 6-1 in league play and 6-5 overall.

Game of the Week

At the beginning of the league schedule nobody would have predicted that Tuesday night's game between Milan and Huron would be a battle for first place.

The Big Reds were struggling record wise and and entered January without a win. Meanwhile, Huron simply picked up where they left off last season. The Chiefs plowed through their non-conference scehdule and were the odds on favorite to repeat as Huron League champs.

What a difference a month has made for Milan. The Big Reds led by first year headcoach Josh Tropea have yet to lose in 2010. Milan was just 2-19 last season but the arrival C.J. Luvene from Ypsi Lincoln along with the emergence of underclassman Andre Duffin, Tory Martinson and C.J. Turnage have changed the fortunes of the Milan hoop program. Those four form what many are calling the most athletic team in the league and a team that could give Huron fits.

Huron has been riding high on succcess over the last two years much in part behind the athleticism of a very strong 2010 class and the excellent coaching of veteran Jim Kalbfleisch. Kalbfleisch has shown a knack for making the right move in nearly every close game over the last two seasons. Huron is led by four seniors who are multi sport athletes and probably none of them can claim that basketball is their best sport. Zac Richardson was the Huron League and Monroe County Region Player of the Year as a goalie in soccer. Tyler Weclowski was the Defensive Player of the Year in Monroe County as a linebacker. Caleb Tavtigian and Dave Stockert both excelled on the football field as well and use their competitiveness, athleticism and size to their advantage on the hardwood.

Tuesday night's game is everything that High School basketball should be about; an up and coming team challenging the defending league champs, a big crowd and excellent players are on both sides of equation.

Look for this to be a fast paced highly competitive game. The team who plays the best defense will probably win this game. Look for my preseason all-league choices of Zac Richardson and C.J. Luvene to have a major hand in the outcome. I anticipate that Huron's veterans, defensive pressure and homecourt advantage will lead the Chiefs to a 56-55 overtime victory.

Player of the Week

Brad Stewart from Riverview has been named the Huron League Player of the Week for the week ending 1/23/10.

The 5'10" junor PG led the Bucs to a victory over Flat Rock and a tough loss to Huron League co-leader Huron.

On Tuesday Stewart scored 27 points in Riverview's 53-41 win over Flat Rock.

On Friday Riverview led Huron for most of the 2nd half before falling 44-43. Stewart drilled 2 freethrows with 10.1 seconds left in the game to give the Bucs a 2 point lead before Huron pulled out the win.

Stewart scored 15 points against the defending league champions and during the course of the week upped his scoring average to 19 ppg.

Riverview stands at 2-2 in the Huron League and will travel to SMCC on Tuesday then they welcome arch-rival Grosse Ile on Friday.

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Did the Huron League scheduler know something we didn't when he scheduled Milan and Huron the last week of the season?

Stewart and Kowalski or Richardson and Stockert?

Is there anything better than a rivalry game in the Huron League?

How many transfers does Milan have?

It sure would be nice to see SMCC and Milan's stats included in Maxpreps.

Baker and Jones make a nice tandem.

Do the referees really matter in the outcome of a game?

Great weekend of basketball for the Schultz household.

Player of the Week

C.J. Luvene from Milan has been named the Huron League Player of the Week for the week ending January 16th, 2009.

The 6'2" senior transfer from Ypsi Lincoln led the Big Reds to two victories during the first week of the league schedule.

On Tuesday Luvene scored 16 points leading Milan to an impressive 57-51 road win over Riverview.

On Friday the Big Reds returned home and defeated Flat Rock 60-54 as Luvene poured in 21 points.

The Big Reds are now 2-0 in the Huron League and will welcome visiting Grosse Ile on Tuesday. C.J. and his teamates will travel to Monroe on Friday to take on SMCC.

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Two games into the league portion of the schedule and some thoughts and questions come to mind.

It seems like Milan's tough pre-season schedule prepared them for the average Huron League?

Will Jefferson manage to win a game in the league?

Is Flat Rock the biggest diappointment in the league?

Huron seems poised to win back to back championships.

Has Airport found a quality big man in Jimmie Fidler?

Can SMCC rebound from a 25 point loss to contend for the league?

Grosse Ile has very good balance but don't you need a go to guy to win games?

Riverview seems like their lacking a true point guard.

Who is the best coach in the Huron League?

Huron Makes Statement

There could be any numerous headlines after the Chiefs thrashed SMCC 62-37 in New Boston on Friday night. Huron was firing on all cylinders from early on in the 2nd quarter.

The Chiefs led 13-12 after one quarter and it looked like it was going to be a close ball game.

Huron opened it up in the 2nd quarter as the Chiefs hit five 3 pointers. Zac Richardson connected on one while Chiefs guards Caleb Tavtigian and Nick Corbiel each nailed two. Huron led 29 -21 at the break.

The 3rd quarter started the same way as the 2nd as the Chiefs outscored the Falcons 18-4. Dave Stockert had a monster quarter for the Chiefs. Early on in the quarter Stockert blocked a Falcon shot then raced down the court for a layup on a pass from Tyler Weclowski.

The 4th quarter was basically mop up time for the reserves as the Chiefs improved their record to 2-0 in the league and 7-0 overall.

In the much anticipated individual match up between SMCC's Keenan Wetzel and Huron's Richardson, it was really no contest. Richardson led the Chiefs with 22 points on a myriad of shots which included 3 three pointers. Wetzel finished the night with no field goals and one freethrow.

Edmond Shinavare led the Falcons with 11 points. SMCC drops to 1-1 in the league and 3-4 overall.

Huron Sneaks Past Flat Rock 67-62

If there were any thoughts that the game between Flat Rock and Huron would be anything but close those were erased as the Rams jumped out on the Chiefs to start the game 11-4.

Flat Rock led by seven at halftime 35-28. Andrew Scarton, Joe Conner, Robbie Kobylasz and Adam Schoen played flawless basketball in the half while Flat Rock's smallest player Dan Chickeral held Huron's Zac Richardson in check.

In the 2nd half Huron showed why they are the defending champs and league favorites as they erased the seven point halftime deficit behind the perimeter shooting of Richardson and inside play of Dave Stockert.

The game was close throughout the 2nd half as Scarton and Richardson battled to see who the favorite is for player of the year honors. Flat Rock was nearly flawless from the line during the game while Huron struggled a bit from the line. In the end Richardson's shooting and Huron's defense was to much for the Rams.

Richardson led Huron with 31 points while Scarton scored 24 and Schoen 16 for Flat Rock.

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

The Huron League portion of the schedule starts on Tuesday and I think we have found out some things about the league. I'm going to re-rank my order of finish after seeing a handful of games.

1. Huron
2. SMCC
3. Riverview
4. Airport
5. Flat Rock
6. Grosse Ile
7. Milan
8. Jefferson

Where are all the assists men in this league?

Is Huron better than last year?

How good is SMCC really going to be?

Should Riverview's Stewart be mentioned along with Wetzel, Richardson and Scarton as one of the leagues top players?

Can Airport make a run at the league championship with virtually no size?

Can Flat Rock put it together after a poor pre-season performance?

When will Grosse Ile get that first win?

Will Jefferson use their physicallity to get some wins?

Will Milan fair better in the league portion of their schedule?

Is this a down year in the Huron League?

Currently the league is 13-21 in non-league play. Not real impressive. Two teams haven't won a game yet and two others only have one win.

Only One Week Until League Play

Well we're pretty much through the non-league portion of the schedule for the league teams and I know I am looking foward to seeing some league matchups. We will have to wait until next Tuesday to see those games though.

There are some games scheduled this week and it will be interesting to see how some teams play after the layoff.

SMCC hosts Divine Child on Thursday. Even though basketball is a game of matchups it will be interesting to see how the Falcons play against the Catholics from Dearborn who lost by 23 to Huron while being held to only 31 points.

Jefferson plays at Woodhaven and should be able to find out a little bit about their improvement against the Warriors. Woodhaven has beaten GI and FR while losing to Airport.

Huron will be playing at the swimming pool in Allen Park. The Monarchs from Cabrini have some decent size and should be able to test the Chiefs with a host of athletes.

Riverview will play a always tough to beat Wayne Memorial team in Riverview. The Zebra's have beaten Taylor Truman and lost a 5 point game to Belleville. J.J Hatzel's team looks like they will have a say in who wins the league championship this year.

Grosse Ile has a tough game on Tuesday against Melvindale. The Cardinals are coached by former Red Devil standout Ryan Vranasich.

So how are thigs looking out there? Is this what we thought the preseason would look like? Let everyone know your thoughts.

New Edition to Blog

I had plans to add statistics to the blog but realized this would be way to time consuming.

I decided to add the maxpreps widget to the bottom of the blog. This widget has the schedules and results for all the teams in the league.

Statistical leaders are available as part of the widget. Unfortunately the only players listed in the stats leaders are those whose coaches have submitted stats to maxpreps.

Currently five coaches have submitted their stats to maxpreps although not every game has been entered. If you would like your teams stats to be include please ask your coach to participate in maxpreps.

If you want to be proactive; volunteer to add the stats yourself to maxpreps so your coach doesn't have to commit his already limited time.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the maxpreps widget. Please submit any comments you may have on it.
