Huron League Thoughts and Questions

The Huron League portion of the schedule starts on Tuesday and I think we have found out some things about the league. I'm going to re-rank my order of finish after seeing a handful of games.

1. Huron
2. SMCC
3. Riverview
4. Airport
5. Flat Rock
6. Grosse Ile
7. Milan
8. Jefferson

Where are all the assists men in this league?

Is Huron better than last year?

How good is SMCC really going to be?

Should Riverview's Stewart be mentioned along with Wetzel, Richardson and Scarton as one of the leagues top players?

Can Airport make a run at the league championship with virtually no size?

Can Flat Rock put it together after a poor pre-season performance?

When will Grosse Ile get that first win?

Will Jefferson use their physicallity to get some wins?

Will Milan fair better in the league portion of their schedule?

  1. Thoughts for this week too.

    1. Huron they r the champs until someone beats them.

    2. Airport outstanding guard play. Should reallly have a nice year

    3. Riverview a very strong tradition they r going to be fine

    4. Flat Rock will be ok but theey need to defend and rebound

    5. SMCC They miss their head coach.. But they r still better than most the league.

    6. GI If they shoot well they will compete

    7. Milan lots of rebuilding here to restore some tradition.

8 Jefferson Not alot said about this but they miss there coach too. They r struggling to find their identity.

    Good luck to you all

  3. I don't no how some of you pick your top players in the league. All stewart dose is shoot the ball. The only player i have seen to do it all is Richardson from Huron. The other guys you listed all do one thing good but Richardson dose it all.

  4. I made Those same picks before the season started. At least the top six don't no after that. You can tell what a team looks like by watching summer ball. You don't see everything but you can see enough to tell where they rank.

  5. airport is too small for riverview and will give huron some problems

  6. Well before the season started everyone said Huron was only good last year because they had a 6-9 guy. Then after we played a few games everyone said it's because we don't play anyone good.Did smcc just lose to divine child at home and didn't Huron beat divine child by 23 at there places. What do you have to say about that this should be good can't wait.Huron will win the league they may go undefeated. And Richardson is everything a coach would dream of in a player. He dose it all not like scarton, weztel, jones, and stewart.

  7. Gave those same picks yesterday.

  8. I agree Huron will not win Championship its a 5 team race really... SMCC Riverview Huron Airport and Flat Rock all could win it...

    Percent Chance of Winning League:

    SMCC- 25%
    Huron- 20%
    Airport- 20%
    Flat Rock- 20%
    Riverview- 15%

  9. I wouldn't say Huron is better this year, they're just a different type of team. Instead of pounding it into the post like last year, they get out and run a lot more. And this year they are 10, possibly even 12 deep.

  10. Riverview 3rd? They only have 1 real scorer in Stewart. He is a great player but he will not be able to carry his team.

  11. Its kind of neat to try to guess who is who by all the spelling mistakes.... the same guy mispells does(dose) every time. then there is the guy who thinks offense is spelled offence and so on and so on...

  12. I have seen numerous times on this site Huron being bashed for their scheduling. Remember folks, you schedule 1 to 2 years in advance and with the Detroit schools, you don't know what your getting from year to year. Unfortunately those kids come and go. And as far as DC, they are always good. This year they happen to be young and played Huron in their opener. And for the other games, if I am not mistaken, Huron handed both Annapolis & Cabrini their first loss.

Oh and Chris-maybe its time to require a name with posts.

  13. I've tried the name thing but all it does is limit the participation.

I think I've been able to do a decent job of keeping the blog clean.

Your always going to get some bantering back and forth but I don't think anyone has crossed the line.

Just remember it has been fashionable for years to rip on Huron, especially in basketball and football.

Now that there has been some success in basketball it seems as if people feel they need to slight the Chiefs by pointing out little things like schedules and stuff.

The fact of the matter is that Huron won the league going away last year and the Chiefs are undefeated right now.

Whether Huron wins the league or not remains to be seen but I find it hard to be critical of anything huron has done basektball wise in the last two seasons and quite frankly I couldn't be happier for them.

  14. I said it earlier.. They r the champs until the are not.. We should give huron credit for a very strong turn around in hoops. I would love to see them win back to back. I remember years when they would win 2 to 3 games a year. We should all be happy for them. As for schedule let's be honest ...Monroe County in general is very week in basketball. Although it does make for some competitive games. Before you bash me for saying the county is week. Think of this .. No regional champinship team in 20 years!! When was the last time someone from the county went to a division 1 school? Our county is below average in hoops. But it is still very fun and competitive.

I would not say anyone's schedule is really all that tough.

    Good luck to all

  15. People love to bash the best... happens all the time in the football blog with SMCC.... now people are saying the offense they run is bad because they fake too much. What will they think of next?

  16. hey chris aren't you the Huron track coach now?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yes, I am the new Track & Field coach at Huron.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Devan Crain, should be the next to go DI in hoops..before him, it was Aaron White...he (White)is the most talented player to come out of the Huron League/Monroe County this past decade..Crain is a close 2nd..

    ReplyDelete
  19. Chris,

  20. 300 lows.... hardest race in track!!!!

  21. I think huron will win the league. 2nd-5th can go to anyone. Airport, SMCC, and Riverview in any order. Richardson, Wetzel, and Scarton are the best 3 in the league. It should be interesting. Airport is better then usual. Jones, Baker, and Pidgeon. They will be a surprise in the league. SMCC is confident with their team as well. But Huron is the favorite. Good luck to all. If i had to pick my top 5 players it would be in this order. Scarton, Richardson, Wetzel, Jones, and Baker. Im not sure about Baker. But i dont trust that Stewart kid from Riv. hasnt proved anything yet. Baker has started for a few years.

    ReplyDelete
  22. A couple of points:

Everingham from GI was the last Huron League player to play DI.

The 300's are a bear but the 800 mostly certainly rivals it.

If I can find the time I will do the 90's and 2000's all decade team. I will only go with five players and a coach.

Stewart from Riverview is in his 3rd year on varsity. What else does he need to prove?

    ReplyDelete
  23. riverview probably plays the toughest pre league games GR bullcrap game but wyandotte detroit central and wayne are good teams

    ReplyDelete
  24. what did Stewart do last year? Voeltz ( i dont know how to spell it) was the entire team.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Stewart averaged 12.8 ppg as a sophomore for Riverview which went 11-10. He shot 48% from the field and 73% from the line.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hurons Backcourt would be averaging in the high 20s if they were on different Huron league teams Richardson could be in the 30s he is just a monster.... so i would mention them for the best starting line up before any other league teams players....

    ReplyDelete
  27. Chris, this is going way back to the beginning of this entry when you asked if Huron is better this year than last, what do YOU think?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well they were 22-2 last year. It is hard to be better than that.

I will say this, their starting five players individually have improved as players over the last year.

Their bench is very good. Better than last year.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Whats all this talk about Monroe county/Huron League. 4 of the 8 teams you are talking about are in Wayne county. Huron, Riverview, Flat Rock, and Grosse Ile. The rest I believe are Monroe County. SMCC, Jefferson, Milan, and Airport.

Now that you look at it. It makes for interesting match ups. Maybe they should have a Wayne vs Monroe County Tourney.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Richardson isnt only one to do it all... Yes he does good but Joe Connor from Flat Rock is second in scorying, most steals, and rebounds... and Baker from Airport is second in scoring, leads in steals, and leads in rebounds... there are a couple people in league who do a lot for their teams

    ReplyDelete
  31. OK take Everingham and White the last 10 years to go D1 out of the Huron League. That means less than .002% of the players go D1. Look the league is fun and competitive but it is nowhere near a strong basketball league. And no one plays a real tough schedule. Thats all I am saying. I stated Monroe County before because the MEN covers all teams in the league except the view and GI.

    Good luck to all

  32. Assist- Find a player or coach that really keeps track of these. I think they should because its very important to the game. Like Open looks, Fast break points, Breaking down a defense and getting backside layups. And making average players better than they are.
I think Baker form Airport and Shinevarre from SMCC are about the only players to think pass before shooting. Scarton could be great if he wanted to play that way

    ReplyDelete
  33. There's a few guys who have three years on varsity.Riverview has not been that good just like Huron.Kids get moved up early but that don't mean nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Mahnick From GI was league MVP the year Everingham was on his team.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Chris
A clarification on the Track and Field coaching job at Huron are you not one of 3 new coaches .

Your statement leads people to believe you are the Head coach.

Also in another one of your blogs a statement was made that Huron won it's 1st Huron League Boys Championship since it joined the Huron League. But from what I remember looking at the banners in the Huron Gym they won a League Championship in the 70's I think it was 1976 or 77. Unless the banner in the gym is wrong

    ReplyDelete
  36. To answer your questions:

I am the head coach for both the boys and girls track teams. We also have two new assistants who I am very excited to have on board.

Huron won their only other league championship in 1977, coincidently my oldest brother who now works for the San Antonio Spurs was on that team. District titles came in 70, 76 and 78. Th Chiefs were beat by Saline in the 1977 district.

    ReplyDelete
  37. That was another media outlet who made that mistake about the league championship.
