Two games into the league portion of the schedule and some thoughts and questions come to mind.
It seems like Milan's tough pre-season schedule prepared them for the average Huron League?
Will Jefferson manage to win a game in the league?
Is Flat Rock the biggest diappointment in the league?
Huron seems poised to win back to back championships.
Has Airport found a quality big man in Jimmie Fidler?
Can SMCC rebound from a 25 point loss to contend for the league?
Grosse Ile has very good balance but don't you need a go to guy to win games?
Riverview seems like their lacking a true point guard.
Who is the best coach in the Huron League?
I don't think there is any doubt about the job Jim Kalb has done. He has to be considered the best coach in the league. It seems like Milan has found a nice up and comer in the coaching ranks though
ReplyDeletestewart is a true point guard...have you even watched riverview at all this year?
ReplyDeleteA score first PG is not a true PG.
ReplyDeleteJim Kalb is not a good coach, Elmer Fudd could coach huron the last two years vs. a weak league and have the same recond.
ReplyDeleteAn early vote for the new Milan coach. Milan was so bad the last few years - big improvement this year with a very young team that is getting better very game. That is a sign of a good head coach.
Chris, I heard that Huron drug tests there players. Whats the deal with that?
ReplyDeletethank you... Stewart is not a true point guard at all yes he scores but true point guards are the ones like Baker or Scarton that can handle the ball, dish the ball, and score... true point guards need to be able to do it all
ReplyDeleteTropea is the best coach in the league..kalbfleish from huron in a close 2nd..Milan will give the chiefs problems, but will lose because they have are young and inexperienced!
ReplyDeleteA couple of points:
ReplyDeleteI think Kalbfleisch is a good coach. You don't win 22 games in a single year without being a good coach.
Huron has drug testing for all athletes prior to the season then they have random drug test during the season.
Do any other schools have drug testing?
ReplyDeleteTrue point guards.. Say no more SMCC Edmond Shinevarre. And yes I picked them to lose to Huron, But looking for a complete player you will find that in him......
ReplyDeleteSpot on, regarding Shinevarre. Great shooter, excellent handles and sees the court well.
ReplyDeleteCo-incidently he was a preseason pick of mine for first team all league.
A couple more points about Kalbfleisch. He wins a lot of close games. That takes good coaching.
ReplyDeleteHe manages to get most of his players in the game. That gets the kids valuable experience and keeps the masses happy.
Huron's JV is also undefeated. He has a direct role in each and every practice.
People will look for Huron to fall off next year. I don't see that happening. He will have a solid core of juniors returning (6) and some excellent players coming up off of JV.
I don't think there is any argument that he is the best coach in the league at this particular time.
Well said Huron League Football. Also the JV coach does a outstanding job with the younger players. They will be strong again next year.
ReplyDeleteOk Kabby has done great job but coaching in the league is not what it use to be.
ReplyDeleteSMCC- The leagend is gone
Riverview- No Hawley
Flat Rock - No Mangin
GI - Berchard or Ryzdik are no longer
Airport- Remember the days of Marlow?
Milan - Tarrant is long gone
Jefferson- Wiley gone bye bye
These coaches were the best at there schools I could remember.
It does look like the new Milan guy is going in the right direction.
Really Chris you think Chinnevare is more of a true point guard then Scarton or Baker
ReplyDeleteI said Shinavarre was a pre-season all league pick along with Richardson, Scarton, Wetzel, Kowalski and Luvene.
ReplyDeletedo u mea the ed shinevarre who was non existant against airport? the ed shinavarre that in the two games i saw (Bedford Airport) did nothing that resembled breaking down a defense driving and dishing for easy layups? His assists come when Wetzel comes off a screen and hits a three. Baker Scarton are the only true point guards in the league, by true i mean team leader, and the guy who handles the ball 80% of the time has an outstanding assist to turnver ratio and does nothing to hurt his team in any way. Ed Shinavarre is a good ball player no doubt but he is still a year away from being considered one of the top PG's in the league and a long shot for all league player. And is Kalbfliesch really overated because he inherited talent? Cuz i remember a Huron coach in 06-07 who had a talented 6'7" shane daley, the best guard in the league in mike clark, gary rodeffer who was a great basketball player before moving to hawaii, gary bailey who may have been one of the top athletes in the league and three others who would have helped other teams in the league and he won a grand total of 3 league games. Coach K is a phenomenal coach, his teams play tough defense for 32 mins, rebound, dont turn the ball over and take smart shots which is the same winning formula michigan state has used en route to becoming an elite team. You cant fault someone because he has talent, he would take any team besides Jefferson and add 2 or 3 win to their league schedule because of his COACHING.
ReplyDeleteMilan graduate '07
to the poster who had remember the days of marlow for airport...i dont disagree one bit that marlow was not a great coach because he was...his teams played basketball the right way and he got the most out of his players...but airports best coach would have to be al jagutis in the early 80's who lead his teams to 18+ win seasons annually, league championships and region coach of the awards
ReplyDeleteI'm going to say stop referring to SMCC by saying they miss the legend. Windham has potential to be a better coach than Lauwers. They just switched coaches. Its annoying how people talk about that
ReplyDeleteOnce again I am puzzzled by one of my posters.
ReplyDeleteYou kinda made my point for me when referring to Shinavrre. SMCC won both the Airport and Bedford games. Wetzel had good games and the PG got him the ball.
I don't think anybody on this blog supports Kalbfleisch more than me. Please read what "I" have written.
As for the rest of that post, I can't even comment. It could be the most uneducated post I have ever read.
Look no offense to any of those guys on that 07 Huron team but we, I was the last player off the bench on that team, did not have nearly the talent that this team has. Mike and Shane were great, but our team underachieving went back to the not giving a $#@% attitude that had been with our team since we started high school and its impossible for any coach to change that in one year. Maybe we would have been better with Kabby as you are implying but I seriously doubt it, since the next year with most of those same kids they only played slightly better. Since you were a Milan graduate you have no idea the kind of attitudes that were on that team and why we didnt win more games.
