All Huron League Blog

Well the season is officially over and it is time to unveil my All Huron League picks.

Player of the Year Zac Richardson Huron, Quite simply put, the best player on what was easily the best team in the league for a second straight year. Richardson averaged 21 points, 3.3 steals, 3 assist and 3 rebounds for the undefeated 14-0 Chiefs. Richardson shot 39% from 3 point land and 46% overall. He was also an 81% shooter from the freethrow line. The Chiefs completed a perfect 20-0 season in 2010 a feat which has only been done a handful of times in the Huron League.

Andrew Scarton Flat Rock, The slick PG from Flat Rock dazzled everybody in the league this year with his Hot Sauce handles, mad hops and unlimited shooting range. Scarton was easily the funnest player to watch in the Huron League the last two seasons.

Brad Stewart Riverview, The junior PG from Riverview has an uncanny knack to get to the freethrow line. Stewart's Bucs finished 11-3 in the Huron League and should be the team to beat next year in the league.

David Stockert Huron, perhaps the most improved player in the league. Stockert was a force on the boards and was an intimidating shot blocker on defense. The senior center averaged 13 ppg and shot 65% from the field.

Tyler Baker Airport, undoubtedly the leader of the Jets senior laden line up. Baker continued the solid tradition of Bakers at Airport by leading the Jets in virtually every statistical category except scoring.

Keenan Wetzel SMCC, Wetzel is probably the best pure shooter in the league. He led the Falcons in scoring and it 3 point field goals made despite being the focus of every defense in the league

Coach of the Year Jim Kalbfleisch Huron, Kalbfleisch led the Chiefs to their first undefeated season in school history and back to back Huron League Championships. The savvy veteran won't dazzle you with a likeable personality but his players are ferociously loyal and he does nothing but win every close game.

  6. Nice to see the News Herald supporting the wrong doing done by some Huron league coaches.

  7. I think it's funny how the FR coach in the begining of the season said scarton and connors are surrounded by fast atheletes. And now that he only one 7 games he's says scarton had no help and Richardson did.

  8. Best 2 parts of the News Herald article:

Classic narcissim by Kabby (more classlessness):

“How am I not coach of the year? It’s like everyone voted down party lines and (because) I’m not buddies with the other coaches, they voted against me.”

It’s this kind of tension that led to the girls getting rid of the MVP award voting altogether, which is also too bad.

Not a bad idea in my opinion (considering the foolishness that has resulted because of it).

  9. People are living in fantasy land. Not only is the talent way down in the Huron League, but the coaching is way all the way around.

Hard to judge the coaching at places like Jefferson and Grosse Ile because the talent is so way down.

The new Milan coach did a good the job the first time around the league but anything was improvement over the last regime. Milan couldn't shoot and had a hard time guarding man to man. Is zone good defense? Or why did he stop playing zone. Did they have good athletes but not good players? Too early to tell.

Flat Rock is everyone's favorite team to dump on, but they really are one-man team. Obviously this program has lost itself but it hasn't had a good staff top to bottom in years, and talent is way down. No way this team wins 15 games with another coach, but they could be better. The jv is out of control, that is not helping the varsity. I think having a terrible football team hurts, look at GI in that respect too. They aren't as athletic as people think.

Airport is fairly well coached and they do a good job of playing with multi-sport athletes. Let's not forget they benefit from being a class A school, thus more athletes, and those multi-sport athletes know how to compete. As unathletic some of the other teams are in the Huron League, Airport is. This benefits any system you want to run.

SMCC is the impossible dream. You have to give that staff a lot of credit for weathering the storm. The cupboard is never bare over there, but you have to give them credit for following the greatest coach in league history.

Is the Riverview coach, the COY, hmmm. I don't think there was one coach that stood out this year. Riverview did a good job of finishing second with a team that is a year away from being the league favorite. Not fair compare to judge the current coach to the last one, but he definitely more confident than he was when he first took over. Why they don't get the ball inside more is a little frustrating to me. They have a nice 1-2 punch in Stuart & the big man.

Huron is obviously well-coached. They do some solid things. Is he great...No...I don't think so. They are overwhelmingly better than the other teams. They didn't really schedule a killer schedule, so it is hard to judge against so many bad teams. I think some people have overlooked the fact that this team is only real team in the league that can put five basketball players on the floor that are okay athletes and have actual basketball positions. No other team can do that. I don't think they are great defensive team, especially since the rest of the league is so mediocre, but this staff has consistently put their talent to use win games. No slip ups along the way.

If Milan wouldn't nose-dived along the way and were a bit more consistent I think that staff would have to have been considered for a COY plug.

  10. PLEASE DONT LET ANYONE READING THIS CONFUSE MY POSTING AS NOT BEING A TRUE RAM FAN. WE ARE VERY HONORED TO BE APART OF THE FLAT ROCK COMMUNITY AND HAVE OUR SON REPRESENT FLAT ROCK SPORTS. HE PLAYS THE BIG THREE SPORTS (FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL) IVE NEVER BEEN MORE PROUD TO SIT IN THE BLEACHERS WITH A GROUP OF SUPPORTING PARENTS TO CHEER ON A GROUP OF FINE YOUNG ATHLETES, WHO DO A GREATJOB OF REPRESENTING THE CITY OF FLAT ROCK!!GO RAMS !!
WHAT I GUESS I'M ASKING EVERY PARENT OF A HURON LEAGUE ATHLETE TO DO IS PUSH YOUR CHILDREN TO BE THE BEST ATHLETE AND PERSON THEY CAN BE. BY EACH ATHLETE PUSHING THEMSELVES TO THE LIMIT ONLY CREATES A BETTER LEAGUE TO PLAY IN, SO WE CAN QUIT HEARING THE COMMENTS ABOUT THE TALENT IN THE HURON LEAGUE IS DOWN!!
AND THIS IS PERSONALLY FOR SCARTON, YOU HAVE BEEN A BLAST TO WATCH ON THE COURT, YOU ARE A ROLE MODEL TO ANY JUNIOR RAM COMING UP BEHIND YOU, YOU HAVE SHOWN THEM WHAT HARD WORK AND DEDICATION TO A SPORT WHAT YOU CAN BECOME!! A DESERVANT BACK TO BACK MVP CLASS ACT PLAYER!! THANK YOU FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT!! STAND TALL AND BE PROUD OF EVERYTHING YOU HAVE WORKED SO HARD FOR.
NOW LET THE COMPETITIVE SIDE COME OUT OF ME, KABBY WHEN FLAT ROCK TAKES HURON DOWN MONDAY SHOW SOME CLASS AND DONT BLAME THE REFS (THEY BRING THE BEST FOR THESE GAMES) SHAKE HANDS WITH THE MVP AND TALK YOUR KIDS UP IN THE LOCKER ROOM, DONT CRY IN THE CORNER STILL WONDERING WHY YOU WERE NOT VOTED FOR COACH OF THE YEAR!! ITS ABOUT THE KIDS!!

    GO RAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I FIRST OF ALL WANT TO START OUT THIS POSTING BY CONGRATULATING HURONS KIDS FOR HAVING 2 GREAT BACK TO BACK SEASONS !!!NOW LET ME EXPLAIN WHY I SAID KIDS, BECAUSE THATS WHAT HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT RIGHT?? RIGHT KABBY? I'VE READ PLENTY OF QUOTES FROM YOU THAT SHOW NOTHING BUT PURE SELFISHNESS AND CLASSLESSNESS "HOW AM I NOT COACH OF THE YEAR?" SOMEONE GET THIS MAN A KLEENEX OR SHOULDER TO CRY ON PLEASE? I AM NOT BASHING THIS MAN AS A COACH, HE HAS CLEARLY PROVED HE CAN COACH BUT AS A LEADER I QUESTION IT?
LET ME TELL YOU WHY! I FAITHFULLY READ THE NEWS HERALD AND EVERY CLOSE GAME HURON HAS, KABY BLAMES THE REFS, NOT GIVING CREDIT TO THE KIDS THAT PLAYED THEIR BUTTS OFF THAT GAME TO OUTPLAY HURONS BOYS, IN THE END HURON FINISHES GAMES !! GOOD JOB BOYS !! BUT AS A LEADER OF THAT TEAM HE SHOULD USE THOSE TIMES AS A LIFE LESSON TO EXPLAIN, LIFE ISN'T ALWAYS FAIR AND NOT TO CRY BABY ABOUT THEM, IT GETS YOU NO WHERE. MY QUESTION TO KABY IS, HAS A REF EVER CAME BACK TO YOU AFTER YOU BASHED THEM IN THE NEWS PAPER AND CHANGED THE CALLS IN YOUR FAVOR? NOPE NEVER BEEN DONE, SO THE CRY BABY STUFF DOESNT WORK ON THE COURT OR IN REAL LIFE SITUATIONS SO DONT WASTE YOUR TIME DOING THEM. DONT PUT THE OUTCOME OF THE GAME OR YOUR LIFE IN SOMEONE ELSES HANDS!! PLUS I THINK EVERONE IN THE LEAGUE CAN AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER COMPLAIN ABOUT THE REFS, I PROMISE HURON THE WHOLE MHSAA REFS ARE NOT OUT TO GET YOU, THEIR HUMANS AND HUMANS MAKE MISTAKES!!
WHAT REALLY GETS ME THOUGH IS THIS WHOLE MVP THING, I AM A FLAT ROCK PARENT OF AN UNDERCLASSMAN ATHLETE. I HAVE HAD THE HONOR OF WATCHING BOTH OF THESE DOMINANT PLAYERS, BOTH ARE FUN TO WATCH AND CAN TAKE OVER A GAME. I GET THAT BOTH OF THEM WERE WELL DESERVING OF WINNING THIS AWARD BUT WHAT I DONT GET IS TRYING TO PROVE WHY THE OTHER ONE DOES NOT DESERVE IT. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT TWO TEENAGE BOYS HERE, SOMEONE HAD TO WIN, AND FOR THE NEWS HERALD TO STATE THEY SHOULD OF SHARED IT, MAYBE THATS TRUE BUT THATS NOT THE WAY THE VOTE WENT DOWN. SO NOW WE HAVE TWO BOYS THAT ARE NOT HAPPY, RICHARDSON BECAUSE HE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND WHY HE DIDN'T WIN IT AND SCARTON MAYBE BEING THE CHILD THAT HE IS QUESTIONING IF HE DID DESERVE IT.
I THINK AS ADULTS WE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF OUR SELVES, I READ COMMENTS ON HERE CLEARLY FROM ADULTS THAT MAKE ME SICK TO MY STOMACH TO READ. THEY ARE FROM PARENTS OF ATHLETES WHO BASH OTHER PEOPLES CHILDREN, WHO THINK CERTAIN ATHLETES ARE GETTING TO MUCH PRESS AND THEY THINK THEIR CHILD IS DESERVANT OF, OR THAT KIDS ARE NOT AS GOOD AS THEY THINK ARE. LETS BE PROUD OF ANY ATHLETE, THEY COULD BE OUT THERE GETTING IN TROUBLE AND DOING DRUGS.
YA KNOW I KNOW SOME OF YOU READING THIS MIGHT BE THINKING SOMEONE THAT FEELS LIKE THIS IS A PARENT OF AN ATHLETE THAT IS NOT THAT GOOD OR IS NOT COMPETITVE, I ASSURE YOU THAT IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS (PROB NEXT SEASON) YOU WILL BE READING ABOUT MY SON ON THIS WEBSITE (ALREADY BEEN TALKED ABOUT ON THIS WEBSITE) AND IN THE NEWS PAPER AND I PROMISE ANYONE COULD VOUCH FOR US WE ARE ABOUT AS COMPETTIVE AS THEY COME, BUT I JUST DONT FEEL THE NEED TO KNOCK DOWN YOUR SON TO MAKE MINE LOOK BETTER. WE TEACH HIM THAT HARD WORK AND DEDICATION TO YOUR SPORTS MAKE YOU BETTER!
WE STILL AS A FAMILY APPRECIATE A SOLID ATHLETE, WE DONT KNOCK THEM DOWN BECAUSE THEIR NOT ON FLAT ROCKS TEAM WITH OUR SON. WE WERE
THRILLED,AS ANY PARENT OF A HURON LEAGUE ATHLETE SHOULD OF BEEN THAT SMCC MADE IT TO FORD FIELD, ARE WE BIG CC FANS ? NO BUT HOW COOL WAS IT TO SEE THE HURON LEAGUE REPRESENTED IN STATES!!

  12. Thanks for the input Ram parent. Please try and type in lower case. It is a lot easier for everyone to read. I have to admit I didn't read it all myself.

  13. Can someone with access to the stats try to logically break down the POTY vote. Maybe these are assumptions, but reading the news herald I infer that each of FR, RV, and Huron coaches voted for their own player. Thus, the vote was determined by Airport, Milan, CC, Jefferson, and GI. Let's assume that no one else voted for Stewart (not making a judgment about whether he deserved it or not). Did Scarton outplay Richardson versus these teams(or at least three of these teams)? Seriously, I doubt any coach intentionally chose to "blackball" Richardson (no matter what old man Kabby says) and most coaches are influenced much more by what a player does against their team as opposed to the league as a whole. So did Scarton outplay Richardson when comparing the matchups of their teams versus the five teams noted above?

Thanks for anyones help in this little exercise. Regardless, I enjoyed watching Scarton, Richardson and Stewart this year. They were a joy to watch.

  14. just a little comment, the best refs are NOT assigned to district games. refs are chosen by the host district - not based on ability - usually as determined by "relationships". quite likely the huron coach has exactly who he wants for these games.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I would add that I go to church with Zac and he isn't mad or even dwelling on the fact he didn't win the POY award. He and his teamates are only focused on winning more basketball games.

As for adults coming on here and bashing children, I have done my best to keep that off of this blog. If I have missed something please point it out and I will gladly review it.

I think most of the stuff written on here has been more of a rah rah thing regarding their own team or player(s).

I look forwrd to watching the game tomorrow. If it is half as good as the first two were it will be well worth the price of admission.

  16. The huron league coaches missed Coach Lauwers at the meeting. When he spoke we all listened. Chris can vouche for that too. I by no means am saying the outcome of either award would have been different with Lauwers there. Although if he would have said that he thouht X was the better player for the season or he thought a certain coach did a great job, we all listened. His words brought immediate respect. He was in the league a long time and in my opinion was a great coach and leader. Just another example of not being able to replace him. He had such a presence in those meetings it seemed like he helped us all to make the right decision.

Both players are great. I coached against them both. Both coaches are very good as well. All four are deserving. Someone has to win and someone has to lose.

As fans you should be grateful to have been able to wath both of them for years. When I coached against them I thought they both were class acts. Great players with great passion and great sportsmanship. It would seem that both of these wonderful young men could teach some of the people on this blog a thing or two about class.

Good luck to all huron league teams in the district. And congrats to my main man Coach Niemi and the SMCC girls for winning back to back district championships.

  17. This situation is a black eye for the whole league. What was Kalbfleisch thinking? Why didn't he voice his issues at the league meeting? Why wasn't this kept between the coaches. Obviously there is a lack of communication if it wasn't brought at the meeting. No one has brought up the fact that there are two rookie coaches in the league at Jefferson and Milan. How did they base their votes. That should be water under the bridge and should have been handled at the meeting behind closed doors. Personally, I don't know anyone who really likes the way Kalbfleisch treats his players verbally during the games and the way he tries to show up other coaches, and the way he goes after officials. The more classy coaches don't try to be "the show" and draw attention to themselves during the game. Playing to the crowd or making a scene during the game isn't the way to act.

Additionally, I thought one SMCC got a new coach that we would we see better sportsmanship during the girls' games too, but it is too bad Huron decided to put in its starters vs Grosse Ile during the districts while up 35. Was that necessary? I could have done without that stunt. The SMCC girls coaches with their lollipops were the worst.

This was distasteful way to end the Huron League season.

  18. Kabby did voice his displeasure during the league meeting.

Your nuts if you think he does anything that other coach's dont do.

Every coach gets on their kids and the officials.

Kabby's biggest problem is his brutal honesty. Ask him a question and you get a straight answer. He isn't a politician, he is an old school coach.

Should he say stuff in the papers. I say no but when he is asked a question, he answers it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Don't buy the "brutal honesty" excuse. Does he say yes when his wife asks if "this makes me look fat?". Does he tell parents that their kids are not good (when they aren't)? Does he tell the administration that they don't know anything about basketball? I doubt it.

It's not brutal honesty...it's a grumpy old guy trying to assign blame. It's sad.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Don't blame this on Kalby the paper came to him. When they ask him a question he gives them his answer. And on the close games Kalby always say how great the other team played. And as far as him saying how can he not be coach of the year. You missed his point in the article his point was how can i at 20-0 not get coach of the year showing how some of the other coaches played games defending why Richardson got screwed to.In less it was real close at the end of the year the coach long ago desided who ever wins the league would get poty and coty.So there would be no politics like what happened to the girls loseing there awards. With this said you need to ask your self what happend then this year.(politicts)And thats why the news herald agreed that there had been some miss justice done with some huron league coaches agreeing with Kalby.I have never seen a local news paper go out and do that before but thats how bad it looks remember 20-0 the next best was 13-7.So take your team hate off and look at the facts like the paper did and beleave me the paper tryed to be as nice as it could be in telling the wrong doing.Politicts is bad and next year it could be you.Get rid of politicians pretending to be coaches and get real coaches.

  21. FLAT ROCK
With scarton mvp, connors, kolby, mcarthy, FR should have won alot more games then 7 witch where mostly against gi & jef.And in the begining of the season the coach says we have a great fast team and we will finish at the top.FR needs a real coach not a politician.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Obviously you don't know Kabby very well. He will tell you exactly what he is thinking if asked.

He will tell a parent directly to their face that their child isn't a good player. He would tell the administration to stick to what you know. As far as the wife comment, I can't answer that accurately but I personally don't know anyone who would answer that question with a yes.
