Milan put a scare into Huron this evening but the Chiefs did what they had to do down the stretch in defeating an upstart Big Red squad 55-52 in New Boston.
The Chiefs were led by Zac Richardson who scored 18 points but was forced by a stingy Milan defense to earn everything he got. Dave Stockert dodged foul trouble enough to drop in 11 while Caleb Tavtigian scored 9 including 2 freethrows late in the game to help seal the win.
The youthful Big Reds were led in scoring by C.J. Luvene with 17 and Andre Duffin who scored 15. Milan's coach Josh Tropea was a joy to watch as he coached as hard as anyone I have seen in quite some time.
Huron improves to 13-0 with the win and 7-0 in the Huron League. Milan falls to 6-1 in league play and 6-5 overall.
Chris - I hear Tropea is a heck of a good coach. You were impressed? It seems like Milan is gonna be pretty good in the future?
ReplyDeleteGeez, you practically nailed the score! Great stuff. Nice to see people take their site seriously. Great job.
ReplyDeleteYea, I really liked what he did with the kids. He was always positive and patient with his players. He worked the officials pretty effectively. He played the kids to their strengths. They played extremely hard for him. Which shows that they respect and like him.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to seeing this matchup at Milan.
Yea,i liked what he did with his kids to,but what about the milan kids.LOL
ReplyDeleteI don't attend many high school basketball games, but after tonight, I may start. The matchup tonight was as good as it looked on paper, and Milan proved to be able to play with any team in the league, while Huron pulled off a very nice win on their own court.
ReplyDeleteWho would have thought that at this point in the season that Milan and New Boston (both boys and girls included) would be 30-0 against the other 6 teams in the league? Simply incredible.
Milan is solid, but i think the best player and best team in the league were established tonight... can't wait for round 2.
ReplyDeleteI attended the Huron/Milan game and I'll say you can't judge a team by the way they warm up. 4 of the Milan boys were soaring above the rim in warm ups and boy oh boy did they look fast! (Who gets the 1 dunk in the game? Richardson!!) Huron played great, all the boys contributed nicely.
ReplyDeleteA couple notes on Milan that I noticed and more than a few people noticed that were sitting around me, when #11 for Milan (name escapes me) penetrated with the ball he made it to the rim and finished nicely nearly everytime but he attempted it so few times.
And Milan's big man on the team, we couldn't believe he wasn't out there more. This boy had some serious skills and I don't think he ever was in any foul trouble. Everytime he was on the floor Milan pulled closer to Huron. I mean this guy stood at least an inch or 2 over Stockert, he seemed to have a nice stroke and blocked a bunch of shots. As a Huron fan I'm glad that both #11 didn't go to the hole very often and the big man for Milan spending much of his time on the bench. Still a great game!
Actually the girls have lost a league game they were beaten last wek by Milan by 1 point.
ReplyDeleteI hope and pray the Coach Klabfleish is feeling better. Don't know if it was kindeny or gall stownes.
While you cant "judge" a team by how they warm up, any good coach can tell by how his team warms up wether or not their heads are in the game. As a coach I watch my team warm up intently to get a gauge as to who may need a "pep" talk prior to tip. The warm up is a often overlooked portion of the "game".
ReplyDeleteChris, I was at another game on Tuesday and was sitting in the front row. Before the game the two coaches was talking about the Huron/Milan game. One coach said that he had talked to the Huron AD and he said that Kabby was suspended and did not have kidney stones. Is that just rumors or is it true? What have you heard?
ReplyDeleteI have heard many rumors and I have drawn some of my own conclusions.
ReplyDeleteI have heard from some people directly that he had kidney stones and has been fighting them for some time. Based on who told me this I trust him entirely and would conclude that he does indeed have a kidney stone problem.
As for a rumored suspension. I know Huron has a policy that kids must attend a full day of school to participate in extracurricular activities. I don't think he was serving a suspension based on that rule.
I'm pretty sure that most schools have a similar rule. I know at cc you have to be there for 5/7 class periods and they have to be 5 consecutive class periods. I'm pretty sure things like doctors appointments and funerals and things of that nature are excused. I have heard rumors that Huron players would go to school late the day after games so who knows what's truth besides those really close to the situation. As I stated I would assume that most schools if not all have a rule similar and I think there should be a rule.
ReplyDeleteI believe the MHSAA standard is half a day.
ReplyDeleteCheck out the points for and the points against! Here are the top 3 teams in the league. Huron has 97 more points for than against. The next 2 are Milan at 30 and Riverview at 26. And in the negative are Airport -1, Flat Rock -2, SMCC -15, GI -47, and Jefferson -88.
ReplyDeleteMIGHTY CHIEFS!!!
MHSAA standards are only a half-a-day. but most of you guys said you went to the game. I think i refs could have been a lil bit better, but that is get me looking at it. and To Anonymous that said milan kids were saying stuff about the gym. That gym is bad. just like ALOT of gym in the hlc. cc shouldnt have home games. sorry to say it. but cris you know its true.
ReplyDeleteHuron has played mostly close games in the league, But two was real blow outs vs. two bad teams in the league
ReplyDeleteAll schools in the Huron League have regulation sized floors and I hadn't heard anything recently that fans have been turned away because games were sold out.
ReplyDeleteThe crowd at Huron was fairly large last night but there were plenty of seats.
Anonymous 4:29 why shouldn't cc have home games? The court is the right size (as Chris said all courts are regulation) and I don't think there has been a problem with seating there before. I know when cc girls played Monroe at cc a few years ago it was pretty crowded and some people had to stand but that was it. So please explain has to why they shouldn't have home games.
ReplyDeletewhat was the problem with out[hurons] gym? we pack 900+ kids into it every assembly... So your gonna tell me there was no room? Hurons entire side was packed.... milans had spots open all over... there was enough room.

ReplyDeleteAfter watching a couple of Milan's games, I completely agree. The big man (Vitso I think is his name)should be in there for most of the game. They actually have some pretty talented seniors on the team and it's a wonder why they don't play much. After watching them warm up, the other two seniors that don't play much can really can really shoot that 3 ball and seem to work hard on defense when they get in. The big man is a dominant force and is, in my opinion, by far the best true big on the team. The other two seniors, Luvene and Kuck, start and play pretty well.
I Think the problem with CC Gym is the layout. The seating capacity is small with the small bleachers and the stage on one end of the floor and bleacher's that can't be used at the other end. Parking is not that great whenn you have to park in residential areas. The fans section is rather loud and the teams are seating right on top of the fans. As the coach from Hoosiers would say it is a cracker box gym. But I will look forward to watching Huron play there on Friday.
ReplyDeleteYea I look forward to watching Huron play their Friday too. I think their isn't a lot of parking because the school isn't that big so they don't need a lot of spots. Anyway it's not that bad. And I like your quote about the Hoosier coach! Is there expected to be a big crowd for the game?
