Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Congrats to Huron for winning their 2nd straight Huron League Championship.

I look forward to seeing Airport and Huron play now that the Jets are back at full strength and firing on all cylinders.

I remember not to long ago when state ranked Flat Rock and state ranked SMCC would play games in the 40's against each other.

Andrew Scarton's 91% free throw percentage is amazing.

As is Brad Stewart's 141 attempts from the free throw line through 15 games.

It's nice to see one of my preseason all league picks Edmond Shinevarre playing well right now.

Is Milan starting to come back to earth or are other teams playing that well right now?

It's hard to argue that a player averaging 21 ppg on the league's only undefeated team isn't the Player of the Year in the league.

When will Grosse Ile be a league contender again?

This may sound crazy but after looking at the Regional pairings Huron has a chance to win the schools first regional in Boy's Basketball.

  3. I believe they are going to play March 2nd.

  4. This is not Huron league, But I think that this is amazing for high school basketball.

In Friday's Monroe Evening News did you see the Whitmore Lake/Summerfield score. WL won the game 110 to 86. But the amazing part was that WL shot 70 3 pointers in the game and made 25 of them.

Has any team in the league even shot the ball 70 time in a game?

  8. Every team in the league has a chance to win a regional. Huron has a the best chance, but in the first round they would play Detroit Douglass and they are tall, athletic, and good. They go 6-4,6-4,and 6-8 across the front line. It will be very hard for Huron to win that game. I remember what happen last year in regionals vs. Inktown. It was not good.

  9. Huron is a pretender

  10. Every team has a chance to win a regional? How many regionals has the Huron league won? Not many!

As for Douglas, I have seen them. They aren't like Inkster was last year. They do have a nice record and some size. I didn't think they were quite that big. I don't always believe the program. Fact is you don't have three stud teams in the regional like 2009 down in Milan.

  11. It is nice to see chinnevarre playing that well but this isn't his year this year in point guards revolves around scarton and baker...

If I picked a starting line up it would be

Point guard: Tyler baker he scores 12 a game and hasn't shot nearly as much as those in front of him ... He is leading the league in assists and is 4th in rebounding. Very very good player

Shooting guard: Andrew scarton would be an awesome shooting guard... Think if he wasn't the one who had to distribute how good of a scorer he would be... He already leads the league in threes... If baker was at point scarton good have field days on offense... He would probably average 30 or something ... Best player in league

Small forward: Zac Richardson is an absolute scorer... Baker and scarton would always find him... He is very good on the defensive end and gets tons of steals... Him getting a steal and running the floor with scarton would be
    Magic.

Power forward: David stockert leads the league in blocked shots and rebounds the ball extremely well... He has some pretty good moves down low as well

Center: Mike kowalski is the leading rebounder in the league and does a pretty good job at blocking the weak stuff down low... Both stockert and kowalski are not just big gumps they are very athletic kids

Bench: kenan wetzel brad Stewart Andre duffin Daniel jones mike oley

How come everyone on hear is starting to bash scarton Andre duffin and Tyler baker. Listen I have seen tons of basketball what you guys need to understand is the good basketball players are the ones who can do it all. I think there are 4 in the league who can do it all... Actually I know... First off scarton us the best in the league his ball handling is through the roof his shooting is unstoppable and his speed kills .... He's the best ... Andre duffin us that good maybe the most athletic in the whole league. He had one bad gAme he is still very talented ... Baker gets more crap than anyone and I don't understand is it because jones scores more but he also averages 7more shots a game... Baker plays a team game. 4th in the league in reboundig as a point guard you guys use to talk about true point guards who leads league in assists? Baker. He's very good not the best but 3rd if not second

I know what it takes to play in college and the four are duffin baker scarton and Richardson turnage from Milan in the future. Sorry so long but you guys that get on here and look at nothing but points and obviously seem to know very little about the game and watch a little to much NBA. Where it's all show. Quit looking and points and start looking at the players overall game

    ReplyDelete
  12. Not really much maybe 3 of them. Hecis the point guard he passes the ball too not just to wetzel. Check your stats big guy. What's wrong with the 3 anyways?

    ReplyDelete
  13. To add onto the comment from 11:43- Please look at everyone's overall game..why don't we look at DEFENSE??????????????? does anyone but Riverview, and Huron play defense in this league..I bet if SMCC, and FR tried it they'd be right there in contention.....one thing I will say about wetzel, he plays great TEAM defense, and shows patience on the offensive end!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hey Chris has any team ever gone 20-0 in R.season or 14-0 in the league. And where does the Huron League stand as far as winning districts and regionals.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The league has won two regionals, both by Grosse Ile. Most recently the Jason Klein led team from 1995. They were beaten by DCD led by Shane Battier. GI could have won that game, they fell 71-65. They also won the Class C regional in 1957. I believe that 1995 team entered the game aginst DCD 25-0.

    ReplyDelete
  16. As for undefeated league and regular season. There have been quite a few undefeated league seasons. I'm not sure about regular seasons.

In the league FR went undefeated in 1970 and 71. GI went undefeated in 2007, 1994, 1995. Riverview did it in 2004, 2005 and 1983. SMCC did it in 1985 and 1990.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Chris whats the farthest you could see huron making it?

    ReplyDelete
  18. David Stockert is the MVP of the league. He is the only legit big man in the league. Don't bring Kowalski in the same conversation as him.

    Season averages:

    Stockert: 11.1 ppg 63 fg% 57 ft% 8.3 rpg 3.0 bpg

    Kowalski: 7.2 ppg 52 fg% 51 ft% 10.5 rpg 2.1 bpg

Only better stat Kowalski has is rebounding, and thats beacuse nobody else on his team rebounds, while Stockert has to compete with his teammates to grab some rebounds.

    Head to Head:

    Game 1:

Stockert: 16 pts on 7 shots 4 blocks 9 rebounds
Kowalski: 5 pts on 7 shots 2 blocks 11 rebounds

    Game 2:

Stockert: 9 pts on 3 shots 4 blocks 10 rebounds
Kowalski: 5 pts on 5 shots 0 blocks 9 rebounds

Stockert has dominated him head to head. That plus the fact that his team is undefeated rests my case. How can you possibly argue that Kowalski is even nearly as good as Stockert.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well it would be easy to say regionals with a loss coming most likely in the semis of the regional. There isn't a great team in that regional for the first time in an eternity.

Huron has to be wary of FR in the 1st game of the district and dare I say Erie Mason is capable of playing well.

If Huron can get out of the regional they would lose in the quarters but would have completed the best season in Huron history.

    ReplyDelete
  20. whose in the quarters that it would be a guaranteed loss for huron?

    ReplyDelete
  21. the GI-DCD game was one of the better HS games I ever saw in person. A talented GI team (Klein, Frysinger, etc.) verse Battier (only a soph. at the time) and the youger Weber bros. in front of crowd at Airport that was probably WAY over fire code.

Chris, do you think any of today's HL teams could even hang with some of the mid-1990's HL teams/talent (Klein, Myke Thom, etc..)?

    ReplyDelete
  22. hey chris what would you take as your starting line up if you could take anyone in the league

    ReplyDelete
  23. nobody ever bashed on Scarton. He is the best player in the league. And he is a point guard. so whoever said he would be a shooting guard is wrong. Best Point Guard in the league. Sorry Baker. And baker would not start over Brad Stewart, Keenen Wetzel, or Daniel Jones. The BEST players in the league in order are
Andrew Scarton... Fast, Scores, Athletic as can be
    Zach Richardson... Scorer, Complete player
Brad Stewart... Gets to the line, and makes them. Great dribble driver.
David Stockert... Best Big Man, rebounds, Blocks, scores some too
Keenen Wetzel... Scores with the three. he can shoot
Daniel Jones... Scores, 3's Steals, Rebounds some too.
Andre Duffin... Athletic, scores, cappable of bein shut down though
Mike Oley... shoots alot... but he scores alot too, and rebounds.
Tyler Baker... Assist, Scores a little, Rebounds.
Mike Kowalski... Rebounds, scores a little, Blocks

    ReplyDelete
  24. Everyone stop saying this kids best or that kids best cuz everytime i look here thats all i isee, Bakers overrated, scartons the best, bakers top 4 rebounder #1 assist, Richardson best player on best team, stewart this or that. It will never be solved by a bunch of people getting on here and saying that one kid is better. There all different all play in a different system and have to do different things because of the team there on. Richardsons 7 inches taller thank Scarton so he can do different things, Baker has help from others shooters Stewart not so much, Point is they all fill their roles on their teams differently and all do so while being the best player on their team. Take any one of them off their team and it changes the teams dynamic and will hurt them. FR is possibly a two win team, Aiport has trouble getting the ball past half court, HUrons not 17-0 and the View is not 2nd the league if you take any of those kids off. Just stop bickering over who is best because its pointless, there all good, all 1st teamers, just leave it at that

    ReplyDelete
  25. I didn't guaranteee a loss in the quarters but that is usually where the going gets tough. I tell you though they would most likely see Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard. Other than that nobody really blows me away that I can see. The other side of the bracket is tougher this year. Most of the ranked teams are on that side of the bracket.

    ReplyDelete
  26. This would be my staring five.

    Scarton PG
    Richardson SG
    Wetzel SF
    Kowalski PF
    Stockert C

I would play a huge zone of some sort probably of the matchup variety.

    ReplyDelete
  27. In regards to competing with the teams of the past it is really tough to tell.

I would say those teams with Klein (GI) and Thom (SMCC) would win the Huron League going away.

    ReplyDelete
  28. If Huron makes it to quarters and faces Ann Arbor Richard they will win. I would be more scared of Dewitt if I was them. All Richard has is a 3 point shooter, Herbeck very similar to Keenan Wentzel except even better, but Weclowski could shut him down. A.A. Richards big tall 6'9 kid is soft and undeveloped so Stockert would hang with him easy. Huron would beat Ann Arbor Richard.

A.A. beat Divine Child at home by 12. Huron beat Divine Child at Divine Child by 22.

So looks like Huron's headed to East Lansing.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't beleive GR has lost since the big kid became elgible. I

    ReplyDelete
  30. LOL..WOW..did I see HURON and East Lansing in the same sentence..this thick brown stuff is getting deep..they're going to have a hard time getting out of their own district which is in NEW BOSTON!!!!!!!!!!!!I'd like to see Huron play Dundee at this point in the year..think both teams would match up great!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Not a hater but no team from the Huron League will win a Regional. I have watched basketball all over the area this year and the Huron League is WAY down. Hope I am wrong but a regional champ is nothing more than wishful thinking...

    ReplyDelete
  32. can u see huron winning the leauge next year?

    ReplyDelete
  33. In regards to Huron winning the league next year, my personal opinion is NO. Milan is very young and talented and Riverview does not lose Stewart or Kowalski. It will be tough to replace Richardson, Stockert, Tavigtan, and Weclowski - experience does matter and I am not sure if there is any "big-time" player currently on the roster at Huron (although their is come good talent). Plus, I think the odds of the coach returning is less than publicly acknowledged.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Huron is doing good in their own District.. They're undefeated and got their second straight league win. I don't see why this is hard to believe with the talent they have on their team.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Check out today's Detroit Free Press, Huron is finally rated. It is number 10 in the state for Class B. is this the 1st time it was rated in the top 10

    ReplyDelete
  36. I believe this is the 1st time Huron has been rated this year.

Next year, Riverview and Milan will indeed be two of the favorites. I also see SMCC being in there.

I think Huron will surpise some people next season. They have two solids guards returning. Wint would be a senior and a 4 yr varsity player and Corbiel would be in his 3rd year on varsity. Brennan would be the lone returning starter. Throw in the twins and you have a veteran team with decent size. Three kids off of a two loss JV team would contribute right away. Plug in an outstanding freshman guard potentially and Huron seems poised to try and make a run at a 3rd straight title. Look for Kabby to stay. He sees the talent that is there through the 2014 class.

    ReplyDelete
  37. huron has a really good chance of winning it next year jesse wint will lock down brad stewart while will breanna will hang with Kowalski, when they played this year Kowalski only had 5 points with 9 rebounds, will brennan had 9 points and 10 rebounds. riverview has no one else on there bench or there starters.

    ReplyDelete
  38. To anonymous @ 1:28 - you present an illogical argument. If by looking at stats Brennan is better than Kowalski, why isn't Stewart GREATER than Wint? Seriously though, you would be hard pressed to find anyone on this forum who would take Wint/Brennan over Stewart/Kowalski if teams were being chosen....

    ReplyDelete
  39. besides returning kowalski, and stewart, the pirates also return part time starter soph corey turner who may be one of the most underrated 3 point shooters in the league,at 6'2"..they're my pre-season fav for 2010-2011

    ReplyDelete
  40. riverview will win the league next year will have a solid starting five and a few bench players back
    kowalski
    stewert
    turner
    gibbons
fasca and on the bench bemish huebe krach

    ReplyDelete
  41. Jesse Wint, Will Brennan, Nick Corbiel, Jordan and Justin Vangiesen will more then likely be the starters for next years Huron team. The 5 are great players and when put on to the court, make good things happen. They're confortable with one anothers game play, they work well together and are all good friends. Wint and Corbiel, will be just what Huron needs to replace Richardson, Brennan will replace Stockert [the kid has hops] and the twins will replace Weclowski and Tavtigan. They've got their chance next year. Wait and see.

  42. I am not a Huron fan, but it is nice to see them have some success the past 2 years. I am not sure if it is good coaching or they have hit their up cycle, and just have been blessed with some good athletes. Either way nice seson Huron.
One thing to remember, I believe it was way back in 1971? FR went 20-0 and ran the table, but lost their first game of the districts to FR?
Watch out for them, even though their coaching is sub-par, that Scarton kid is pretty good!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Jesse Wint, Will Brennan, Nick Corbiel, Jordan and Justin Vangiesen are all solid players, but they are not "stars" like Richardson and Stockert. Milan and Riverview are bring back star players from this year. SMCC JV team last year was very good also, so I put them in the mix also. Those 4 teams will battle next year and I put Huron in the 3-4 spot

    ReplyDelete
  44. FR ran the table and lost to FR?

    ReplyDelete
  45. FR lost to a Rick Wasilewski led Huron squad. FR was undefeated and ranked #2 in Class B. Huron won that game 86-64 in the district semi-final. The Chiefs lost in the Regional to River Rouge 67-57. The Panters led by the legendary Lofton Greene won the state title that year. The Chiefs held Rouge to their lowest point total of the tournament. Rouge would win 4 straight titles from 1969-1972.

Rick Wasilewski is to be thought by many as the greatest player in Huron history. The 6-6 center had a soft touch and was a ferocious rebounder. Lofton Greene said after the regional game that Wasilewski was one of the best players the Panthers had faced all season.

Sorry about the history lesson but I remember a conversation my father had with Lofton Greene when I was a young man about that 1970 regional game.

  46. Thanks for the correction. It is tough to beat someone 3 times in 1 season. May be an interesting game.

  49. The Greatest Player I have ever seen come out of Huron although he didn't really mature until his senior year, then after HS he got much much better is Dennis Edmonds. 1982 graduate from HHS. I know you have had to see him play somewhere Chris and if you have he certainly was a joy to watch.

He has to be around 46 or 47 now but I promise you, let him drop in on a alumni game and watch if he don't drop 30-40 points.
And what about Gene Ritze (not sure about the spelling) here is another great ol' Huron player.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Dennis graduated in 1983 from Huron. He was a good player while at Huron. He received special mention all Monroe County Region that year.

He did get much better out of high school and was a great shooter after he graduated. I believe he played a year at Henry Ford Community College.

In my opinion Gene Reitz was a much better player. He currently holds the school scoring record with Rick Wasilewski. (Co-incidently both were St. John's Waltz guys).

Reitz went on to play and captain the basketball team at Grand Valley. Gene is currently a pastor in Adrian and his son is a senior three point specialist at Lenawee Christian in Adrian.

I knew Gene very well, he was my older brother's best friend and lived just down the road from us. The pickup games at the Reitz house are legendary. There would be 15 guys playing every night in their huge driveway. If their wasn't B-ball practice or a game of some sort, they were playing and of course I was watching (what else was an 11 yr old to do?)

    ReplyDelete
  51. I agree with you on Gene being a better player than Dennis while they were in HS, and I'm sure that their stats reflected that. But about 5 years or so out of HS Dennis became sort of an Icon on all the courts around New Boston and the Downriver area. It was amazing to see how much better he got after HS.

I remember Terry Mills coming down to an open gym at Huron one year (this was late 80's maybe even as late as 89 or 90.)
There were about 25-30 basketball players there and we talked Terry into playing Dennis 1 on 1 up to 10 (1 point per basket) He said he didn't want to humiliate the little guy but he would humor us and play him anyhow.

Dennis proceeded to spank Terry 10-4. Mostly from outside the first 5 or so baskets. Then Terry said why don't you try driving on me and Dennis scored his remaining points via taking the ball to the hole, and stealing the ball from Terry at least 4 or 5 times when Terry had possesion.
After the contest Terry shook Dennis's hand asked him who he was and what college/pro basketball team he played for and told him that he reminded him of Danny Ainge.

He then picked up his bag lowered his head and walked out of the gym. Everyone erupted into cheers and hi-fives for Dennis. Then we went back to playing like nothing happened.

FYI Terry was a Romulus Grad in 86. (6'10" at least 230lbs.) I'm pretty sure he was Mr. Michigan Basketball that same year. He was drafted 1st ROUND 16th PICK OVERALL into the NBA and spent somewhere around 10 years playing PRO Basketball most of them for the Detroit Pistons.

I would still put up good money today on Dennis Edmonds if anyone wanted to callenge him to a friendly game of one on one.

BTW Dennis is 5'10" maybe 11" and 160lbs. soaking wet. (and he could dunk)

I'll never forget that day!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Oh one more thing, after the whooping Terry Mills received by the skills of Dennis Edmonds word got around pretty quick. So we would see new faces every Saturday morning coming down to play open ball at Huron with a few more challenges every time for Dennis.

Just ask Andy Mangin next time you see him how bad he got whooped up on.
But that's another story for another day!

  53. I know this is from like a whileeee ago but I felt like I should put this up here.

Mike Kowalski is a whole year younger then David Stockert idiot! But I just think it's funny how close Kowalski's stats are to Stockerts! Mike is a dominant big man. I have to deal with him at practice all the time I'd think I would know... and I'm 6'6. Keep up the good work Mike!
