  1. Top Scorers-According to the Monroe Evening News

    SMCC- Keenan Wetzel-34 pts

Airport- Daniel Jones-21, Tyler Baker-18, and Jeremy Pidgeon-18

Flat Rock- Andrew Scranton and Rob Kobylasz with 12 each

NB Huron- Zac Richardson with 24

Thats all they have on there now. They have the jefferson game on there, but not their top scorer.

  2. could be a long season for flat rock.....ida lost a lot from last year too. Hey huron, play some tougher competetion....gimme a break. it's like playin jv teams. smcc is for real people. glad i voted for them to win the league. i don't know if that's a good win for airport over carlson, carlson lost a lot, plus they have bailey as a coach.

  3. I caught the Huron game tonight. You can criticize the team they played all you want but Huron is pretty darn good.

  4. Bedford has a pretty good team. That's the best freshman I've ever seen on varsity (6' 6" Jackson Lamb)

  5. I was at the Airport Carlson game tonight... and yes i do agree not a very impressive win for Airport they were up on Carlson at half by 9 and couldnt pull away in second half and let Carlson come back... but you have to watch out Jones and Pidgeon can shoot and Baker does well at getting them the ball

  6. huronleaguefootball,
    A few questions for ya.
Who are these "excellent guards" you were referring to from Flat Rock? The best guard on the floor last night BY FAR was the kid from Ida, Sielski. Not very flashy, but disciplined, and didn't have a lot of Turnovers..
How Impressed are you with SMCC? Basically they had a week of practice with a full squad, and beat an athletic bedford team. Jackson Lamb is the best big man in the county- as a FRESHMAN..
Who's the best player in the Huron League? Wetzel or Richardson
Do you think Riverview can compete for a League title? wonder how they did last night, or if they even played.
Grosse Ile, Airport, Flat Rock, ...CONTENDERS or PRETENDERS?

  7. i was at the Flat Rock game, and yes they didnt play to good, but the Rams were within 7 the whole game untill the end. The refs were usualy ida refs, who only call the calls for ida, it has been like that for YEARS with any team that travels there, i think they said the free throw difference was, ida=40 flat rock=7, thats was to one sided, flat rock was playing aggressive defense and getting fouls called on them that were just down right awful, scarton dove for a loose ball and got a foul called on him when i kid fell on top of him, but a minute later he drove to the basket and got hammered and a no call was the result, Joe Conner, what are you thinking, stop shooting jump shots if flat rock wants to win, he was like 0-6 on jumpers and forcing way to many drives, he did score on putback rebounds tho, and that is what he should be doing, Kobylasz shot something like 4-10 from 3-point land, which for him, to me, is not that great, if he can get his shot falling and Scarton will get those calls anywhere else, Flat Rock will be fine. And for the airport game, how are you gonna say that was an impressive win, over a team who has ONE returning player, and the kids isnt even good. Airport's basketball isnt to great, i mean, it's not FOOTBALL.

  9. Let's see if I can answer all of these questions. I would classify the combination of Scarton, and Kobylasz as excellent guard play for the level of basketball that the league is. Scarton rolled an ankle on Friday and wasn't at full speed against Ida. Kobylasz hit 4 threes. Did Ida win that game because of better guard play last night? They won because they held a 3 to 1 rebounding advantage.

I would say that SMCC's win over Bedford is a solid win. I would day a 34 point performance from Wetzl is impressive.

I picked Wetzl as the preseason Player of the Year. There is no need to change that know. Richardson looked good last night and could of had 50 if coach K would have played him more than 14 minutes.

I think Riverview is capable of competing for a league title but are probably a year away.

In regards to the other teams you mentioned, I would say this is a two horse race between Huron and SMCC. SMCC has a legitimate star in Wetzl and Huron will prove they were not a one hit (season) wonder. They are tough.

  10. Huron played everyone because they played who? The school for the deaf and blind

  11. And compare everyones top scorers, airport had 21,18,and 18. Everyone else just had one person score high.

Airport's scorering is alot more balenced

  12. Ida shot 29 free throws, and converted 18, Flat Rock shot 8 and converted 3. Joe Conner will be fine, he was far and away the best athlete on teh floor last night, and will be every night the rams play..i'd like to see him play downlow because of his leaping ability! The Refs were homerish, but FR did not take the ball to the hoop..how are you gonna draw fouls passing the ball around the perimeter and jacking up 30+ 3's a game? Ida is well coached..switched defenses nicely, and out hustled the rams..if FR shows up like that against Huron the chiefs will enforce a running clock

  13. I wish coaches/newspaper articles would focus on the game more who scored what...it's hard to gage if a kid had a good game by how many points they scored..they could have scored 11 points on 23 shots, with 11 turnovers, and they'll be in the paper for scoring in Double Digits..One thing i've noticed on the decline in high school basketball is..(playing defense by moving your feet..all kids want to get fancy and reach,) (i've seen about 3 people take charges in the past 20 hoop games i've been to..this includes last year)....(rebounding..it's about hustle, and wanting position, reading the ball off the goal, and WANTING THE BALL)..kids just try to outjump one another....(I feel some kids are reluctant to dive on the floor for a loose ball)..There was a day when anyone would dive on the floor...maybe one or two players on each team..I think for success in the long run in the Huron League you have to do the little things I just mentioned....those can take you a long way in the Huron league!!
