Interesting Article

I found this article in Sunday's Detroit Free Press to be an interesting read. In my humble opinion probably the reason most coaches decide to get out of coaching.

PLAYING TIME IS EARNED! this isnt middle school where everybody gets to play. This story really bothers me! WHAT A SHAME!!!!!!. I feel bad for the coach who loses his job despite leading the team to the semi's. But you know what? The coach will be alot bettter off now, because he will no longer have to deal with all the helicopter parents.

GP SOUTH+overprotective sissy helicopter parents+nonathletic incompetent athletes+cowardly administrators who give into the demands of rich parents= A BAD ATHLETIC PROGRAM!!!!!

  2. Nowhere is this type of behavior evident than at SMCC where all the kids of the influential and powerful go.

  3. Chris that's what you get on this board when you try to bring up a subject and expect a mature discussion. It has to lead to some sort of bashing. Good try though

    "Whats your deal?"

no seriously man, what is your deal? This seems like a mature discussion. The first poster was obviously enthusiastic in his statement, but he did make good serious points. Coaching in a community with rich helicopter parents and elitist kids is a hassle and burden for hard working coaches. I agree with the first poster. The second poster is just bein funny. Lighten up man, lifes too short to be angry. be happy. And anyways on a lighter note, Is Les Miles coming or not, the suspense of this coaching search is killing me. I dont get why brandon didnt just fire rich rod before the new years. I know his buyout went down but still, UM's recruiting class is looking pretty good......................if your Kent State. Seriously, UM's recruiting class is awful. This coaching search isnt going well.

  5. I think Brandon/Harbaugh somehow had enough discussion prior to the bowl game that he felt sure that Harbaugh was coming. Mary Sue Coleman did not want Harbaugh and that was crushed.

I don't know who Michigan will hire but they need a guy with Head coaching experience, can recruit the midwest with ties in Texas and/or Florida, runs a multiple set pro style offense and stresses defense and special teams first and foremost.

  6. I cannot believe the few parents at GPS would go this far... its MAC Football, this casts a major dark cloud over the MAC and GPS.

  7. I can relate to the situation the article adresses. I have coached boys and gilrs at various levels from grade school through high school and the article hit home for me. I stopped coaching because of parents of players and their demands. Some parents believe their children are entitled to more playing time or to start just because the parent of said player is a member of a booster club or a board member. I must agree with one of the posts above, PLAYING TIME IS EARNED, not given! Also, parents love ya when your team wins and blame the coach when the team loses. I see both sides of it now, because parents of other players will text my wife complaints about a current coach of one my children. The parents complain about everything from coaches cancelling practices because of prior commitments to playing time and the lack of instruction to their children. With all that said, the parents that cry and complain about things should :
    1. If you (a parent) think you can do it better, than get your butt out there and coach. LMAO! That is not going to happen, because they would rather complain instead of help.
    2. This is how it is in the real world. Do you think if you went and complained to your boss about your supervisors that anything really is going to be done about it. I think not. More than likely your life is going to made more miserable for complaining in the first place.
    3. If you want something you must work for it. I dont know about most of you , but I have to bust my butt to get anything I want out of life. No, parents would rather show thier kids that by complaining and throwing fits , one will get what they want.

So with all that being said, I do miss the kids and coaching, but do not wish to coach anymore because of the politics involved. Thats what really hurts, I still have kids that see me from time to time at functions and they ALWAYS call me coach , and not by my name. GO FIGURE!!!

  8. It is the administrators that do not back their coaches thats the problem! To worried about politics instead of having a backbone and standing up for a coach.
