Practice Starts Monday

Basketball practice starts around the league and state tomorrow. Each team will begin practice tomorrow with the hopes of claiming a league championship.

SMCC, Jefferson and Milan are all opening the season with new head coaches. Randy Windham of SMCC has the biggest shoes to fill by replacing the legendary Ray Lauwers. Most people around the league seem to think that Windham will do an excellent job at SMCC. In early season fan polling the Falcons have been tabbed as the team to beat.

Huron returns a solid core of veterans and the Chiefs hope to defend their Huron League title behind third year head coach Jim Kalbfleisch.

Flat Rock returns the reigning player of the year in point guard Andrew Scarton and figure to have a say in who wins the league.. The Rams also return to valuable pieces to their squad in Joe Conner and Robbie Kobylasz.

Riverview is another team that returns a group of veterans and the Pirates made sure they played their usual tough summer schedule that always prepares them for the Huron League.

Airport and Grosse Ile figure to be improved this year and both teams should have solid guard play this winter.

Look for a handful of posts from this blog each week in an attempt to add a little something extra to the season.

  5. My thoughts on the upcoming season:

SMCC- They return the best scorer in the league and I feel the new coach will throw some different defenses at teams.. Which in turn could lead to easy wins for them.. They win the league.

FlatRock- Nice floor leader in Scarton ... Has has some solid help but they will be behind SMCC but in front of everyone else.

Riverview- Solid tradition gives them the third position. There gym is a tough place to play.. Who will be there next big gun?

Huron- Coming off a great season last year and return a few key players. The loss of the big man will hurt. They can beat anyone I just dont feel they will do it often enough to be in the top three.

Airport: NO Size.. Good guard play ... They could play spoiler when Jones shoots well, Although without much help the team will still struggle.

Grosse Ile: They are right in the middle of the pack. They could beat a few teams anytime .. Just not a whole lot there.. The new coach is doing the best he can with the talent he has.

Milan: New Coach .. Hopefully for them it means more wins. They have alot to do to get back to the glory days of winning the huron league title.

Jefferson: New Coach here too. Not much talent here and no depth. They could struggle to win each night.

I wish good luck to all the huron league teams.
