Huron League Voting

We have a while before the preseason vote is over for the fans pick for league champion. It looks like it is a three horse race between SMCC, Flat Rock and Huron.

The Rams return the reigning Huron League Player of the Year in Andrew Scarton. SMCC has a lot of players back, an excellent JV team moving up and Keenan Wetzl. Huron returns most of their team including guards Zach Richardson and Caleb Tavtigian.

One team I wouldn't overlook is Riverview. They have some solid players returning and some excellent size.

Anyway, keep voting people! The Season starts soon.

  1. I'm not a huge high school basketball fan but Milan has a new head coach this season. Not particularly this year, but it will be interesting to see how quickly or even if he can turn around the program. Any thoughts?

  2. i think that flat rock will be tough, Scarton coming back, as well as another starting guard (Kobylazs), Joe connner who can defend about anyone in the league, and Adam schoen who was a monster on the boards in the summer league, watch out for flat rock this year.

  4. With Wetzel, Shinevarre, and Howey dropping threes all day. And a solid group crashing the boards with Highers, Wilson and Harras.. Watch Out

  5. look what happened last year when smcc faced off against flat rock.....TWICE, wetzel cannot score on the stingy flat rock defense, or if he can, he hasnt showed it yet

  6. Summer ball pretty much tells you where everyone will be.
    Huron & RV - will finish 1 & 2 ( ? what order )
    SMCC - will finish 3
    AP&GI&FR - WILL finish 4,5,6 ( ? what order )
    Jeff.Milan - will finish 7 & 8

  7. I should preface this comment by saying I had a sterling record of 23 wins and 40 losses in my three years as a varsity head coach but I never put much stock in summer ball. Coaches mix and match players. Some coaches just rotate five players at a time every five minutes. Much of summer ball depends who you play.

I can tell you this, some teams in the league didn't play anybody else in the league. They went elsewhere to challenge their players against bigger and better competition. That is not a slight just an observation.

  8. The only two teams that where not at summer ball where SMCC&JEFF.And last years summer ball played out just like the season ended. You could be right i am only going by last year. But i still think SMCC,HURON,and RV will seperate them selfs from the others.

  9. I don't know where the other Huron League teams played summer ball, but I know SMCC played in a summer league down in Toledo at St. Francis De Salles. They played like 2 days a week and had 2 games each time. Really good compeition. St. Francis, Waite, Bowling Green are just a few of that were in the league.

  10. I think that was smart of Randy to take his kids down there. I know when I played way back in the day; both Flat Rock and Catholic Central would play down at St. Cecilia in Detroit. We never played each other but always played some great competition.

One year when I was an assistant at FR, we went all the way to Wisconsin for a tournament where we played 8 games against schools from 8 different states. Another year we went up to Benzonia and played some tough competition.

No way is better than another. I just think it makes sense to get out and play teams you normally don't play.

  11. I agree with you Huronleaguefootball. Very smart of Randy. SMCC saw REALLYYY good compeition in that sumer league. Most of the teams down there are probably better than any team in the Huron League. But I do think some schools (probably Huron and Flatrock) could hang with them like SMCC did. SMCC didn't win a ton of games, but they won some. GREAT experience!

When I went down there to watch I talked with a parent of someone on a Toledo team and they said that down there they pretty much have open gym everyday in the summer once school is out. I don't know if any team in the Huron League does that. They probably have open gyms, but i doubt they have it every day.

  12. YOU CAN COUNT ON THIS THE TEAM WITH THE BEST DEF. WILL WIN THE LEAGUE.You boys do all the shooting you want.Build them stats fight for that MVP.But you will not win the league shooters. The team that puts the 5 best def. players out there will win the league. They will take the easy baskets.
Better % shots + Def. = HURON LEAGUE CHAMPS.

  13. Which Starting Backcourt with you guys rather have?

    Huron- Tavtigan-Richardson
    Flat Rock- Scarton-Kobylasz
    Airport-Jones-Baker
    Riverview- Stewert-White

Me? id like to have huron's or flat rock's, i think that if you put a good point gaurd who can score and pass, and a kid who can shoot the three ball, then youll be sucessful, huron and flat rock both do just that.

  14. okay good question but tavtigian cannot handle the ball like scarton and baker can hes a good point guard dont get me wrong but scarton and baker have been on varsity for a long time... and out of the shooters you have on there jones is a better shooter in my perspective then richardson... i would take Flat Rock if you want to handle the ball a little bit over Airport and Airport if you want to score

  15. I take the Huron guys they play Def. first and thats why they will beat FR. & AP.

  16. i dont know how u can say baker and jones are better than richardson and tavtigian when match up against each other last year the huron kids dominated them and the tempothey might not have the best player in the league but as a team they mesh well and have to be the deepest in the league

    ReplyDelete
  17. alright Richardson and Tavtigian did not dominate Baker and Jones last year... the only reason Huron one is because they had a kid that was 7 foot and Frank Hassle who is like 6'3 6'4 They were both hard fought games with Airports tallest player only being 6 foot... you dont have those guys anymore Baker and Jones along with many other seniors will kill you this year

  18. huron is returning the most athletic big man in the league next year in david stockert at 6'5-6'6 who is due for a breakout year Richardson is also 6'4 so there will be match up problems again also with athletes like weclowski and tavtigian i dont see them keepin up so dont get to excited huron should handle airport again this year. Huron is still to deep and especially for a team like airport huron will have trouble with riverview cc and flat rock besides that huron should coast through the league football season is over!!

  19. mike kowalski is the best big man in the league not david stockert
